The masters of arts in early childhood is designed to prepare one to teach in pre-kindergarten through grade three classrooms (ages 0-8), as well as early childhood special education for ages birth through three in home visiting programs, and for ages three to six in early childhood special education classrooms. In addition, this master's program also provides non-certified K-12 teachers, employed in early childhood settings, an opportunity for advanced employment in the field.

Admission Requirement:
- Applicants must meet the GPA requirements for graduate school at NMU.
- Applicants seeking an early childhood endorsement must hold a valid elementary and/or special education teaching endorsement.
- Applicants who hold a bachelor's degree without a valid elementary or special education teaching endorsement seeking to meet the requirements for teaching in an early childhood setting may enroll in the program with the understanding that completion of the master's program will not lead to a teaching endorsement.
Endorsement Requirements
- Valid State of Michigan elementary or K-12 special education teaching certificate.
- Completion of a 300 clock-hour field experience in two of the following: infant/toddler, pre-primary or primary school age children.
- Passing score on the Michigan test for teacher certification (MTTC) in the area of early childhood education (ZS) test No. 106. Registration materials available at http://www.mttc.nesinc.com/MI_testinfo.asp?t=106
Upon completion of all program requirements, students must submit a completed endorsement application on the MOECS website at http://www.michigan.gov/moecs to add this endorsement to their teaching certificate.
