Nursing at NMU
The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree prepares graduates to provide the most advanced level of nursing care for individuals, families, groups and communities. This includes direct care of patients, management of care for individuals and populations, administration of nursing systems and development and implementation of health policy. The program consists of two tracks, a Post-Baccalaureate and a Post-Master’s. The patient population focus is families and individuals across the lifespan (Family Nurse Practitioner). Courses are delivered on a part-time basis, using a low-residency model, which includes online coursework with two on-campus visits. Clinical practicum hours may be completed in the student’s community with an approved preceptor. In addition to clinical practicum experiences, students may choose to take elective courses in nursing or other areas of graduate study.
The DNP program received full accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) in 2016, meeting nationally mandated standards.
Program Requirements
The Post-Baccalaureate curriculum is 72 credits and includes 1,000 supervised clinical practicum hours. The Post-Master’s track is designed for students with a Master of Science in Nursing degree and national certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner. The Post-Master’s curriculum is 45 credit hours and clinical practicum hours are individualized, based upon prior coursework.
Admission Requirements
Office of Graduate Education and Research
- Complete an Application for Admission to the Office of Graduate Education and Research and submit the application to 401 Cohodas, along with a $50.00 application fee. The application is available online at: https://www.nmu.edu/graduatestudies/apply
- Students must be admitted by the Office of Graduate Education and Research before being considered by the School of Nursing for the DNP Program.
- Send official transcripts from all universities previously attended (with the exception of NMU) directly to the Office of Graduate Education and Research.
- Must have a BSN or MSN from an accredited nursing program with a minimum 3.0 GPA.
School of Nursing Admission Requirements
- Complete an Application for Admission to the Doctor of Nursing Practice Program and submit the application to the School of Nursing, 2301 New Science Facility, Marquette, Michigan 49855. The application can be completed online and emailed to Melissa Romero (mromero@nmu.edu). Application materials are available at: http://www.nmu.edu/nursing/node/57
- Applications received after the deadline will be considered on a space available basis.
- Incomplete application materials will not be reviewed.
- Email Melissa Romero (mromero@nmu.edu) to find out if the application materials have been received by the School of Nursing.
- Current RN license. Attach a copy of your RN license to the application.
- Attach a current resume to the application.
- Three recommendations: - one academic (candidates who have graduated within the last three years must include a faculty recommendation) and two clinical colleagues or manager. Please use the recommendation forms provided at: http://www.nmu.edu/nursing/node/57
- Interview with the Graduate Committee (on-campus or via ZOOM or SKYPE).
One-page written description of your goals for graduate study. This is completed after the interview with the Graduate Committee.
Other Desirable Qualifications
- Completion of an undergraduate or graduate level statistics course (preferred but not required).
- Completion of a health assessment course in undergraduate program with a B or better.
- Completion of courses in anatomy and physiology in an undergraduate or graduate program with a B or better.
Prerequisite Course:
AIS 535 – Using Scholarly Library Resources in Support of Graduate Research
Students who are admitted to the DNP program are required to take AIS 535 within 5 years prior to the start of DNP coursework. The course is offered during the summer semester prior to the start of the DNP program.
Computer Requirements
Students are encourage to participate in NMU’s laptop program and must have access to a high-speed Internet connection. Student should be proficient in using Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, e-mail and accessing the Internet.
Post Admission Requirements for the Clinical Practicum
Students must provide the School of Nursing with current evidence of the following prior to their clinical rotations:
- An unrestricted RN license
- TB skin test (annually), MMR, hepatitis B, varicella and Tdap
- CPR certification
- Nurse practitioner student malpractice insurance (approximately $250 per year)
- Criminal background check
- Urine drug screen
