Program Requirements
School Counselor Endorsement: Graduate students who hold a teaching certificate are eligible to apply for Guidance Counselor Endorsement (NT) on their teaching certificate (minimum 31 semester credits). In addition to completing the required coursework, students must also pass the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) in Guidance Counseling, and apply for endorsement through the NMU School of Education Teacher Licensing Office.
School Counselor License: Graduates of the NMU Guidance Counseling Program with a master of arts in education (MAE) who seek to become a guidance counselor in the K-12 school setting, and who do not possess a teaching certificate may be eligible to apply for the School Counselor License in the State of Michigan. It is important to note that the School Counselor License from the State of Michigan may not be valid in other states. Students who hope to seek employment as a K-12 guidance counselor in other states must contact each state's education department or School Counselor Association to learn about requirements for certification. The American School Counselor Association (ASCA) maintains a current list of certification requirements for all 50 states (www.schoolcounselor.org). In addition to completing the required coursework, students must also pass the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) in Guidance Counseling and apply for licensing through NMU's School of Education Teacher Licensing Office.
The required internship provides an opportunity to integrate theory, research and practice.
