Abby Schaefer

Construction Managment major from Johnsburg, IL

Meet Abby Schaefer, a Construction Management student from Johnsburg, IL. Abby plans to graduate in May of 2025

I have always loved family camping trips to the UP and was excited to learn there was a college here within a reasonable distance from home.

I went through the list of degrees offered here, thought construction management was interesting, did some research, and committed. My mom didn't like my methods but it has worked out really well so far!

One of the most rewarding experiences in my major was completing the construction management senior project. For my project, we worked on designing and constructing an entrance archway for the soccer field. This project brought together nearly every skill we’ve developed throughout our time at NMU, from planning and budgeting to collaboration and problem-solving.

The experience was unique because it was almost entirely student-led, allowing us to take full ownership of the process from start to finish. The soccer entrance archway garnered far more attention than we anticipated, receiving incredible support from both NMU and the broader community. Along the way, we built lasting relationships with local industry professionals— connections that will continue to benefit us long after graduation.

The gratitude we felt from the athletic department and the community reinforced just how impactful our work was. This project wasn’t just about completing a task; it’s something I’ll always be proud of and look forward to returning to in the future, showing my family the lasting impact I had a hand in creating.

Being a Wildcat embodies a sense of pride and shared experience. During my internships, I’ve had the privilege of connecting with alumni who speak about their time here with great fondness. No matter how many years have passed, there’s an unspoken bond between Wildcats—a connection forged through unique experiences, traditions, and opportunities that are ours alone to cherish. To be a Wildcat is to be part of a legacy of pride, connection, and community that continues to inspire and unite us wherever life takes us.

Perseverance. It took time to find my place at NMU, but in the end, I discovered a supportive and inspiring faculty, a tight-knit group of friends I’ll cherish long after graduation, and a degree that unlocks endless opportunities for the future.

Don’t let yourself fall too deeply into a routine—this is your time to explore. Marquette offers countless opportunities, from campus activities to vibrant community experiences, and an incredible variety of people to meet. College is one of the rare times in life where you can safely take risks, make mistakes, and discover who you truly are. Embrace every moment (good or bad) and make the most of it.

The construction management program is truly one of a kind here. I feel so lucky to have had this faculty to support and encourage me throughout the years. I am graduating soon knowing full well that I will always have a resource here to guide and advise me throughout my career.
