Meet Abby Woytko, a Nursing major from Crystal Lake, IL. Abby plans to graduate in Fall of 2025.

I decided to come to NMU for the nursing program and all the great things I had heard about it, I also came here for a change in location and too enjoy all the things the U.P. has to offer!

I decided nursing based off of having an interest in the medical field as well as watched my grandmother achieve many things as a nurse. I want to follow in her foot steps and have success just like her!

Many of the interesting things that we do in nursing school, revolve a lot around the clinical setting. each semester is a little bit different, but during my second semester of nursing school, I was able spend a day in different specialty locations. For example, one day I was in the OR, which was an amazing experience getting to be alongside a RN and a CRNA. As well as I spent another day in the wound care clinic, which is something I’m also really interested in.

Being in nursing school is hard work so finding time to do things can be hard, but I enjoy getting together with friends and exploring Marquette, as well as attending sporting events. Meeting my closest friend my freshman year, when I was really in need of someone, has been the most rewarding experience for me at NMU.

Being a Wildcat to me represents growth and resilience. It also reminds me of my role as a student and how important my education is. Being a wildcat also means being a smiling face to others as well as just having fun!

This can sometimes be a tough adjustment when coming to college, feeling like you have no place to fit in when you may have fit in so well at home. I think the biggest thing for me was making new friends on my floor in the dorms, as well as going to different social events and meeting others. I think it can sometimes be hard for people to put themselves out there, including me, but doing so helped me find my best friends and I got to meet some many other new friends too!

NMU has a lot to offer as well as the surrounding nature has an abundance of activities and outlets to learn new things or continue old things. NMU has made me fall in love with nature more and more every day and I feel I’ve grown and learned a lot from my college experience!
