Ethan and two friends in the winter weather

Meet Ethan McKenna, an Outdoor Recreation Leadership and Management Major from Traverse City, MI. Ethan plans to graduate in 2023.

I love Marquette and the UP. It was also the best school in the state for an Outdoor Recreation degree and has lots of things to do outside which has helped me hone in my outdoor skills and preform better in class.

I have always been someone who likes to be outside and chose to focus on a career doing something I am passionate about and provide opportunities to travel.

I participated on a week long Winter backpacking trip last year and I gained so much practical knowledge that’s hard to get in the classroom and I was able to take what I learned in the woods and translate it in class moving forward.

I am involved in marching/pep band and a couple band ensembles on campus. Off campus I am often mountain biking when there isn’t snow on the ground. The most rewarding experience for me has been seeing my growth in my abilities on the trail.

Be northern means to getting involved in the local community in Marquette and trying new things. Whether it’s hiking in the woods or watching live music at blackrocks one should get out of bed and do something to make memories.

I would tell someone coming to northern will be a unique college experience you can’t get downstate and be an opportunity to get involved in a tight knit community.

After going to NMU for two years I’ve realized how small of a university it really is, a lot of people I have met also know each other. This has been a really fun thing for me because once you meet a few people it’s really easy to continue connecting and making new friends.
