Finding my place at NMU: Why it was the Right Move for Me

When I started college, I thought I had it all figured out: a Big Ten school, a degree in veterinary medicine—the whole plan. But two years into community college, I realized that path wasn’t for me.

One night, I remembered my high school dream school, Northern Michigan University. I went online, filled out my transfer paperwork, and took the leap, without a campus tour, without ever setting foot in Marquette.

Was I 100% sure? Nope. However, NMU turned out to be exactly where I was supposed to be.

Since transferring, I’ve lived in the dorms, switched majors (twice!), joined campus organizations, and discovered a career path I truly love: Public Relations. Now, I’m a senior on two executive boards, graduating in May, and even considering my MBA here at NMU.

If you’re a high school junior, senior, or transfer student, here’s what I wish someone had told me: you don’t have to have it all figured out. NMU gave me the space to explore, the support to start over, and the community that made Marquette feel like home.

If you’re looking for a place to find your path, take it from me, Northern might just be where you’re meant to be, too.
