Growing up as a military child was nonetheless hard. Although, over the years, I have come to realize the beauty of it all. I seek new experiences and changes that help shape me and gain all the different perspectives. I have learned to love living life outside of my comfort zone. I was born in Fairbanks, Alaska. Some refer to Fairbanks as the “North Pole.” I never knew why I found such comfort, beauty, and hospitality in Marquette and within the NMU campus. Only a few months into my first year did I realize this place was my home away from home. The beauty of nature, the refreshing breeze of Lake Superior, the Yoopers that are so genuine, and the mountains to hike and explore are the reasons I came to NMU. No, I did not know why I was drawn to this University. I found out why during my college experience. I am now an applicant to pursue my graduate degree at NMU.

NMU taught me to slow down and smell the flowers along my way to greatness. It was what I needed. I was able to grow as an individual because I was able to breathe and not feel so rushed. These four years are meant to be spent making mistakes, memories, friends, and finding/loving ourselves. We must learn from trial and error, as it is what life is about. We must not take situations, classes, and people around us for granted, as they help shape us into who we are meant to be. Everything has a purpose, including every individual. We are not here by mistake or accident. We all have a purpose within this world that must not go unshown. Every experience happens for a reason. We cannot grow and become better if we do not experience the good, bad, and ugly.

I started my freshmen year off lost with no passion. I blindly put biology as my major. It was my first biology lecture when I said, “Nope! This is not for me.” As we come across situations, classes, and people that do not serve us, we must not forget that these are the moments that make us, us. We would not be where we are today if it wasn’t for these moments. We must not take this for granted as they help shape us into who we are meant to be.
