What is your NMU connection?

Student: graduated in 1976

Your favorite NMU memory or story

In the winter of 1975 - 1976 I was a member of the Northern Michigan University Hockey intercollegiate club team. If my memory serves me well Geoff Westin (sp?) was the primary initiator of forming and getting the team approved. With both Lake Superior State and Michigan Tech having hockey teams it was well overdue for Northern to follow.

The team competed in non-sanctioned games at other Universities in Michigan.

In many ways the team was forging the path forward for the rolling out of a full fledged D-1 hockey program. The players worked hard, showed up and had a great experience. At the end of the 1976 season NMU announced Rick Comley would join to form and roll out the hockey program at NMU.

Who is the most influential person you met during your time at NMU and why were they so influential?

Doctor Farrell in the Geography Department.

A great teacher who had suffered a stroke and pushed through to relearn speech and other skills to remain a valuable teacher.

Talk about any significant/memorable sporting events, weather occurrences or other on-campus activities

The National Championships in Football one year.

Playing intramural hockey in the old (1904) Palestra building (torn down in 1974). It was so old that water dripped onto the ice making dangerous ridges you had to contend with. But, still a blast of an old building to play hockey in!

What is your current or former profession?

I was a Senior Manager for FedEx Ground/Home Delivery. Also Distribution Manager for an e-commerce company
