Meet Grace Listopad, a Sustainable Business and Enterprise Creation major from Mount Prospect, Il. Grace plans to graduate in 2024.
Why did you decide to come to NMU?
I decided to come to NMU because of the beautiful location, being right on Lake Superior and surrounded by nature. I also chose it because it felt like home right when I stepped onto campus for the first time. There were so many opportunities at NMU for freshmen that were not available at larger universities.
How did you decide your major/minor?
I had planned to double major in environmental science and management, but while I was at the Presidential Scholars Competition, they mentioned a new major that was a perfect mix between the two, sustainable business and enterprise creation. I chose to enroll in the major, and I am extremely happy with my decision!
What's an example of a cool, interesting or helpful thing that you have done as a part of your major?
As a part of my major I was able to take PR432 with Jes Thompson, in this class we ran environmental campaigns and learned how to influence people. My group worked on laying the foundation of a zero-waste store on campus. That is exactly what I wanted to do with my major, and I was able to start my first year at NMU.
What are you involved in on- and off-campus and what has been the most rewarding experience?
I am involved in PRSSA, EcoReps, Yoga Club, Freshman Fellows, and more. The most rewarding experience so far has been EcoReps and working on the Green Fund Proposals. This is because we are making a clear difference in the sustainability on campus while taking student input as the main focus of the choices of how we use the Green Fund money. The ability of EcoReps to be involved as much as you want is rewarding as well, as you can be extremely involved if you want to.
What would you tell someone who is considering coming to NMU?
Come visit us and see! If they have the major you are looking at or if you're undecided, NMU is an excellent place to start your education. Everyone is so welcoming, the campus is small and homey, and the location is the best! I strongly encourage you to come to NMU if it is a school of interest to you!
