Holiday Gift Giving: Something to Want, Need, Wear, and Read

HOLIDAY GIFT GIVING: SOMETHING TO WANT, NEED, WEAR AND READ

Finding the perfect holiday gift for your college student is a daunting task to conquer. Toys have long since been retired, money may seem trivial, and prompts of what they would like may end in promised responses that never arrive.

One emerging holiday trend simplifies these stressors by sectioning the process of gift-giving into four areas: something they want, something they need, something to wear, and something to read. Although this trend limits you to only four gifts, it allows you to set your own budget and invest in things your student will truly love.

SOMETHING THEY WANT

Although your student may not give you a direct response of what they would like this holiday season, it is almost guaranteed that there is something they really want. You can tailor this to the passions and interests of your student, but there are many other routes to take too. Instead of focusing on physical items, this category is also a great opportunity to gift experiences. From gift cards to local restaurants, to tickets to their favorite music artist, these experiences are moments that your student will never forget.

SOMETHING THEY NEED

This category highlights gifts that your college student may not even realize that they need. Water bottles, slippers, backpacks, portable phone chargers, smart watches, reusable containers, planners, and bluetooth headphones all meet the parameters of this category. However, this is also a fun opportunity to explore subscription services that your student may enjoy. Meal kit and streaming service subscriptions are a great way to give your student a gift that “keeps on giving” even past the holiday season.

SOMETHING TO WEAR

Most of the academic year at NMU requires a few layers of clothes, so students are always in need of warm things to wear. The holiday season is the perfect time to invest in cozy winter coats, boots, hats, and gloves, especially for students who are avid ski and snowboard enthusiasts. College apparel and accessories from the NMU Bookstore are also something that all Wildcats are proud to wear.

SOMETHING TO READ

Although they may not consider themselves a reader, this category highlights gifts that your student can learn from. Items to read are most commonly a physical novel or an e-book. However, this is also a great opportunity to give subscription services to platforms like Audible or magazines themed to their specific interests.
