Girl giving thumbs up on top of hill

Meet Mikaela Bannon, a Fisheries & Wildlife Management major, from Fish Lake, Indiana. She plans to graduate in 2023.

I decided to come to Northern because of the endless opportunities and small campus community. NMU has an excellent fisheries and wildlife program and the small campus community makes you feel like you're part of a family. The wide variety of outdoor opportunities also drew me to NMU.

From a young age, I have had a deep passion for the outdoors. I have always known I wanted a career in fisheries/wildlife management. Being an avid outdoors-woman who enjoys hunting and fishing, I am dedicated to the management and conservation of our precious resources.

As a part of my major, I have had many opportunities to conduct field research and gain hands-on experience with wildlife.

My time spent enjoying the outdoors has been the most rewarding.

Challenge yourself, work hard, and enjoy yourself! Challenge yourself to be the best you can be and work hard, because it will pay off in the long run. Soak up every minute and experience all that you can, because it goes by quickly! Put yourself out there and meet new people as well. Some of your best friends/relationships might be made in college!

I have been at NMU for 3 years now, and I've had some of the best years of my life! I've grown both personally and professionally and have been given so many fantastic opportunities. You will never forget your time at Northern!

To me, "be Northern" means getting the entire NMU experience. Get involved in clubs, sports, and organizations on campus, but also take time to experience everything the surrounding area has to offer. There are so many opportunities for outdoor recreation within minutes of campus. Hiking, kayaking, skiing, snowshoeing, fishing, hammocking, camping, sailing, disc golf, and backpacking are just a few of the many opportunities the U.P has to offer!
