Jadyn Maki

Meet Jadyn Maki, an Elementary Education major from Ishpeming, Mi. Jadyn plans to graduate in 2025.

I decided to go to NMU because it is a smaller campus, which is exactly what I wanted. With smaller classes, I am able to to get to know my professors better, and have more one-on-one interactions with them as well.

I originally started off my first year at Northern undecided, but it didn't take me too long to realize I have a passion for working with children. My teachers in elementary school made a great impact on me as a student, and I wish to do the same.

As a part of my major, I have had the opportunity to go to local elementary schools, and get an inside look of what teaching is all about.

I am involved in the Student Leader Fellowship program on campus. The SLFP program is a way for students to develop leadership skills throughout their career. Not only has this program taught me the importance of being a leader, but what my strengths are and how I can apply those to my everyday life. I believe that supporting your community is a great way to show who you are, but helping other people is the most rewarding part.

To me, BeNorthern is all about joining a community to help grow yourself academically and personally, while pushing yourself out of your comfort zones.

To anyone considering going to NMU, I would tell them to come visit campus to get the feel of it. Northern is a completely difference experience once you're actually here, and everyone deserves to experience that feeling of greatness that Northern has to offer.

My experience at NMU has taught me things about myself, that I would have never known before coming here.
