Meet Jenna Uchiek, a Secondary Education Mathematics major, from Zion, IL. She plans to graduate in 2025.
Why did you decide to come to NMU?
I had originally planned on majoring in hospitality, and Northern’s program looked like the right fit for me. Also, the UP is gorgeous, and it’s close enough if I need to go home in an emergency, but far enough away that I get a change of pace.
How did you decide your major/minor?
I just switched to Secondary Ed a few weeks ago. Being a teacher has always been an idea of mine, but I had been to scared to commit to it until now.
What's an example of a cool, interesting or helpful thing that you have done as a part of your major?
I haven’t started classes for my major yet since I just switched to it, but I’m really excited for the different math classes I’ll get to take, and I’m excited to student teach in a few years!
What are you involved in on- and off-campus and what has been the most rewarding experience?
On campus I am part of the Special Events Committee and I’m part of my floor gov. I think the most rewarding experience has been seeing the changes come to our floor after we have meetings and discuss the ideas we want to see.
Do you have any advice for someone who is considering NMU?
Northern is a special place to be. It’s located in such a beautiful area, and the people are so nice, it’s a great school to go to. The professors are really nice, and the advisors and faculty will absolutely support you in order for you to get the most out of your education.
Further comments about your NMU experience:
I’m really starting to find my place at Northern, I love it more every day!
What does “be Northern” mean to you?
Be Northern means being able to find something new. I was looking for a change when I came here, and I definitely found it. It means being able to step out of my comfort zone and be vulnerable to trying new things.
