Meet Juliana Garcia, a Elementary Special Education major, Dallas, Texas. She plans to graduate in 2025.
Why did you decide to come to NMU?
I wanted a change of scenery and something new. And I figured moving across the country would be a good place to start.
How did you decide your major/minor?
I wanted every child to have the same opportunity in their education no matter their abilities, background, etc.
What's an example of a cool, interesting or helpful thing that you have done as a part of your major?
I will be working this Summer at Baycliff Health Camp. It is a camp for children with special needs and it allows them to have the full blown summer camp experience. Working here would give me more experience for my major, and I found out about the job through the Education Department.
What are you involved in on- and off-campus and what has been the most rewarding experience?
Within campus I have been a part of the Latinx Student Union, Greek life (Alpha Gamma Delta), and Hall Government. I also volunteer to tutor children through the Student Success Project. Volunteering in the UP 200 with Alpha Gam.
Do you have any advice for someone who is considering NMU?
Do it! You'll always have a form of community you will be a part of and resources are always available if you need help.
Further comments about your NMU experience:
Being a first generation college student, a POC, and an out of state student could be hard sometimes, but I'm grateful for the people I have in my life on campus who have helped me through new experiences.
What does “be Northern” mean to you?
Be Northern to me means letting your inner child out and explore! Growing up in a city, I was never given the opportunity to experience nature. In Marquette and especially at Northern, I'm able to walk outside anywhere and I have new places to see and forest to hike through.
