Kadie LaRock

Meet Kadie LaRock, an Elementary Education/Language Arts Major from Gwinn, MI. Kadie plans to graduate in 2024.

I decided to come to NMU because it was close to home, and I knew I wanted to stay in the beautiful Upper Peninsula. Both of my grandparents attended NMU for teaching and have exclaimed nothing but good things, so I knew it was the right place for me.

I have known that I wanted to be a teacher, but the spark that ignited education was when I co-directed a youth theatre summer camp in high school. Hanging out with kids everyday and teaching them something I was passionate about was one of the coolest experiences of my life, and I will forever be thankful for that experience.

A cool thing that I have appreciated is having the opportunity to visit schools around the area. I get to experiment with teaching styles and figure out what my identity is as an educator. I also was guided into substitute teaching! I have my license and take jobs whenever I get the time in my schedule, which I have loved.

One extremely rewarding experience is my job off campus, at Kids Club: Child Developmental Center. I have been working there for the past 2.5 years and have had the opportunity to learn hands on in a classroom setting. I've met many amazing kids whose personalities shine so bright. My most favorite experience was putting on a bake sale during Christmas with my preschool class. We managed to raise 1,500 dollars and helped purchase Christmas presents for families in need. I will never forget this experience.

To #beNorthern means that you are forever apart of a community. This community supports each other and embraces individuality, which is what I have specifically loved about attending Northern.

Go out and explore! Marquette is a beautiful place to live, so finding your "people" and experiencing college life an amazing opportunity.
Also, if you are worried about the work/school schedule: find a job that doesn't feel like a job!

I have had the upmost support from the faculty in the School of Education. Everyone I have worked with whether it is an advisor, professor, or peer has guided and encouraged me throughout my journey, which has been incredibly comforting.
