Kate Hughes

Meet Kate Hughes, a public relations major from Spring Creek, Nv. She plans to graduate in 2024.

I have family in Marquette, so I’ve always visited and loved the area. For me the decision was easy… family, and I love the lake!

Public Relations was not always my major. I started out studying Physical Therapy, then Radiography. The switch to Public Relations was random for me, since I’ve always thought I liked science, but it was primarily because I was unhappy with where I was headed and didn’t want to do the same thing every day for the rest of my life and PR presents lots of opportunities to do different things.

Something that I've done that's been helpful to my major is making connections and taking chances. Inquiring about jobs and meeting new people has always been the suggestion people make first when I mention my major.

I am involved in PRSSA. This club allows Public Relations students, along with students of other majors, to meet and connect with one another, as well as others in the field of Public Relations.

To me, beNorthern represents the tight-knit community that is Northern. The smaller size school and community allows connection to many people and a family feel throughout.

The Marquette and Northern communities will both make you feel incredibly welcome right off the bat. NMU is a great place to be.

Make the most of your college experience. Get out and do things, meet people, and most of all, make it fun!
