Leah Purkiss

Meet Leah Purkiss, an Art and Design - Digital Cinema major from Northville, Michigan. She plans to graduate in 2022.

I chose to come to NMU to escape city life, experience the outdoors, gain independence, and to learn from fantastic professors and faculty.

I decided to study digital cinema/art & design because they guaranteed me studio hours right away. I was able to work on big projects as soon as I joined the school. My portfolio started the day I came here, not until my senior year like other schools. I decided to major in digital cinema to share stories!

One really cool thing I have done as part of my major is help work on a variety of film shoots for students. Collaboration is a major part in filmmaking!

On campus, I am one of the producers of Public Eye News, a TV show that airs out of WNMU-TV. Working there has been fantastic! I’ve been able to gain leadership experience, management skills, and much more. Now, in my senior semester I recently got an internship at TV6. I am so excited to have this job opportunity since it may lead to future job opportunities at other stations.

"be Northern" means, being independent, exploring the world around you, being bold, and enjoying what you study.

I would tell them to be prepared for the snow, be ready to become independent, and don’t be shy in making friends.

Fantastic job opportunities on campus. Highly recommend to students who want to gain experience in their industry meanwhile studying at university full-time.
