Merle Richter at a Ski Race

Meet Merle Richter, a Master of Interdisciplinary Studies graduate student and member of the NMU Nordic Ski Team from Sayda, Germany. Merle plans to graduate in August 2025.

I came to NMU because I wanted to join the Nordic ski team and Marquette normally offers a great winter, making it the perfect place for me as a winter sports athlete! Marquette, in general, is a smaller and cute college town, which made me want to stay a little longer and add on a master's after completing my bachelor's. It's the perfect place for me to be able to study, focus on my skiing career, and get the American experience.

I have always been interested in Psychology and have been an athlete nearly my whole life. The new Sports Psychology program gave me the perfect chance to continue studying after finishing my bachelor's at NMU and to take classes in that field.

I have been able to use my own experiences from being an athlete and struggling with motivation issues over the years to now studying to become a mental performance consultant and overcoming my own challenges.

I spend a lot of time with training, but have also been involved in "Cats Connect" which is a group on campus for athletes that is advocating for mental health and challenges that athletes go through. This lines up perfectly with my master's program as well, where I can have presentations with my supervisor around the topic of mental health etc.

Being a wildcat means having a second family in a different country and being able to fully enjoy my time overseas having my teammates around every day and hopefully skiing a lot again in the next season!

Marquette is an amazing place to live and you’ll meet some amazing people and have great experiences. NMU is a place that wants you to enjoy all that along with getting a great education and it shows!
