Meet Mikaela Bannon, a Cosmetology major, from Rogers City, MI. She plans to graduate in 2022.
Why did you decide to come to NMU?
NMU is unlike any university I’ve ever toured and it’s just home it’s really that simple and NMU is everything to me
How did you decide your major/minor?
My mother was a cosmetologist so when I found NMU and that they had a cosmetology program I knew that it was what I wanted to do.
What's an example of a cool, interesting or helpful thing that you have done as a part of your major?
Being able to work on the student population and just being able to hone in on my skills has been super helpful with my major and it’s really cool that we get to work with other students.
What are you involved in on- and off-campus and what has been the most rewarding experience?
On campus I am apart of Phi Sigma Sigma and I’ve done a lot of philanthropy with them and it’s changed my life. Off-campus I am the current Miss Michigan Volunteer and I’ve been able to help many community members around Marquette.
Do you have any advice for someone who is considering NMU?
NMU really is a home no matter who you talk to or no matter what you do you always have support and you’ll always have friends behind your back. It’s a university unlike any other and if you’re one for nature outdoors new experiences and bonds it will last a lifetime and NMU is for you.
Further comments about your NMU experience:
I’m really sad to be graduating this year but NMU has prepared me for the future and I’ve never been more ready!
What does “be Northern” mean to you?
It means let go and just live don’t think northern would express any other mentality we’re surrounded by nature and we’re surrounded by experience so sometimes to be northern you need to let go and just live!
