Mitchell Grahek

I liked the feel of the campus during my visit. I also loved the idea of living in the UP and exploring all there is to do here.

I’ve always wanted to go into a profession that allows me to help people. I spent some time working in a hospital and really loved it. I also spent a lot of my childhood receiving medical care for various reasons, which led me to pursue the path to medical school.

I’ve gotten to be very hands-on in laboratory settings, both in class and through assisting graduate students in their research. One example is harvesting and culturing chicken embryo fibroblasts in Advanced Cell Biology.

Off campus, I am involved with a Group known as UP Sled Hockey. It is a group that provides a place for those with disabilities a chance to play the best sport in the world. As someone who grew up playing hockey, I love any chance to get out on the ice, and it’s awesome to be out there with a group of amazing people. I also am a referee for youth and high school hockey in Marquette and the surrounding area. I am a part of two clubs on campus: the PreMed Club and the Powersports Club. The PreMed Club, like all the pre-professional clubs, provides people with a common goal the ability to help each other along their path and get advice from those who have previously gone through the same process. The Powersports Club is just a place for people with similar interests to hang out and go explore all the UP has to offer.
 

Being a Wildcat to me means making the best of whatever life throws your way. There’s no right way to live a life, so it’s finding people that you enjoy being around and going out and doing whatever makes you happy and a better person.

I got lucky and found the right people. NMU is full of people that enjoy doing just about anything there is to do, so there’s a group for everyone up here.

Marquette is an amazing place to live and you’ll meet some amazing people and have great experiences. NMU is a place that wants you to enjoy all that along with getting a great education and it shows!
