Meet Nicole Marion, a Neuroscience major from Oxford, MI. She plans to graduate in 2022.
Why did you decide to come to NMU?
I decided to attend NMU mainly due to all the opportunities it had. Because of my major I was highly encouraged to get involved with research as soon as possible, which other universities didn’t offer the same experiences. Also, the smaller size of the school allows you to get to know your professors which makes a world of a difference with your education. And let’s not forget the beauty of Marquette!
What's an example of a cool, interesting or helpful thing that you have done as a part of your major?
There are too many things to list! Some of the highlights would be the sheep brain dissection in PSY 250. I have also had many incredible experiences participating in research. Recently because of everything I learned conducting research I received a summer fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota!
What are you involved in on- and off-campus and what has been the most rewarding experience?
I try to be active both on- and off-campus. I am involved with a number of clubs relating to my major; the neuroscience club, the student psychological association, and PSI CHI. I am a captain of the hip-hop dance crew, and I also participate in ballroom dancing. I try to spend time with the conservation crew when I get the chance either going on hikes or trying to improve the environment. The most rewarding experience is meeting people with different interests and majors. It’s a great way to learn new perspectives and avoid burnout.
What would you tell someone who is considering coming to NMU?
I would tell you to come check out the campus and talk with the professors and students if you get the chance. Once I toured Northern I knew this was the school for me. I had people try to steer me away because it isn’t a big-name school but I truly believe I would have never had the same success if I decided to go elsewhere.
Further comments about your NMU experience:
Get to know your professors! My education has been amplified because I go talk to my professors. I have gotten incredible opportunities I would have never known about if I never went to office hours. I know it can be scary but they love to talk with their students and they want nothing but success for you!
