Meet Rachel Placeway, a Sociology & Criminal Justice Major and Substance Use Minor from Plover, WI. Rachel plans to graduate in 2023.
Why did you decide to come to NMU?
The first moment I set foot on campus I knew NMU was the school for me. Located in the heart of the outdoors and along Lake Superior I knew there would never be a lack of adventures. The college itself offered numerous opportunities for students to expand their knowledge and involvement through various educational conferences, experiences, community programs, and many others.
How did you decide your major/minor?
Like many students, I changed my major and minor multiple times until I decided on pursuing both Sociology and Criminal Justice with a focus on Substance Use. Drawn to the multiple hands-on and analytical courses offered in both fields, I knew I would be able to apply my passion for progressive and alternative programing to better the quality of life through evidence-centered research.
What's an example of a cool, interesting or helpful thing that you have done as a part of your major?
What are you involved in on- and off-campus and what has been the most rewarding experience?
The most rewarding experiences from my time at NMU has been those which challenge me physically, emotionally, and academically. Throughout my college career, I have played rugby for the NMU Northstars and on multiple select teams, volunteered on community non-profit boards, and attended a regional sociology conference. All these experiences helped me discover how strong I am and that I am able to pursue things outside my comfort zone. Being surrounded by nature, it is hard not to enjoy the adventures the U.P. has to offer, such as hiking, snowboarding, camping, swimming, and numerous other activities.
