Construction Managment major from Ishpeming, MI
Meet Renee Blanck, a Construction Management student from Ishpeming, MI. Renee plans to graduate in December of 2025.
How did you decide your major/minor?
I decided on Construction Management because of my mom. She introduced be to NMU’s Women in Construction Day in middle school, and I’ve been to all of them ever since. When I was exploring a career path, she explained what construction management really is, and how there are so many paths you can take. I also love how I am able to be hands-on while also in a professional environment.
What's an example of a cool, interesting or helpful thing that you have done as a part of your major?
I feel very lucky because I have been able to do multiple internships through NMU’s Construction Management career fair. I first went to Chicago, then Nashville the next summer, and then Lansing, all as a Project Engineer Intern. Each summer I learned a number of new things that just can’t be taught in a classroom setting. I also got to live in new cities and discover what type of lifestyle I like.
These internships have built relationships across the country for me with multiple company’s, so I feel very confident in being able to find a job that is best fit for me. It is so important to make connections, and also stay in contact!
What are you involved in on and off-campus and what has been the most rewarding experience?
I was titled the “student ambassador” by my professors, and this means I represent the students for the construction management program in any way I can. I attend campus visits and connect with incoming students, and show them what it’s like to be a student here. This is rewarding because if these students choose to attend NMU, I get to see them around and already have that initial connection with them.
What does being a Wildcat mean to you?
Being a Wildcat means to persevere. Being up north and also a smaller school, it’s easy to feel overlooked. We have to compete with larger, more well known schools when entering the workforce, and that can be intimidating. Using the unique resources and environment that we have up here is key to standing out. Being a Wildcat means facing inevitable challenges and powering through it.
How did you find your sense of belonging at NMU?
I felt like I belonged at NMU when I connected with my professors. All of the CM professors go by their first names, so right away it feels more personal. The classrooms are smaller, so the teachers always know your name too. Getting to know your professors is so important because they have so much to teach you beyond the curriculum. The Construction Management professors at NMU truly want you to succeed, and will always be there as a resource and as a friend. They made me feel like I belonged at NMU.
