In this course, students will further develop and refine their listening and speaking skills necessary for academic success and for appropriate and confident participation in social communication in an English-speaking community. In preparation for academic study at an American University, this course will provide students with daily opportunities to engage in small group and class discussion on academic topics while developing the necessary skills and resources to ensure comprehension. Instruction will focus primarily on the development of fluency in the student’s spoken communication, but will emphasize accuracy in production at a pre-advanced level. Students will improve their note-taking skills by learning and practicing new strategies for listening to and comprehending academic lectures on various topics. In addition, students will prepare and deliver formal academic speeches/presentations throughout the course. They will collaborate with classmates to complete a variety of assignment types. Finally, students will improve their test-taking skills in order to successfully improve their scores on standardized language tests (i.e. TOEFL, IELTS).
