This interdepartmental minor focuses on substance use and approaches to explain, prevent and treat substance use disorders in the United States. It is especially appropriate for students pursuing degrees and careers in which they will have interactions with people experiencing substance use disorders. All courses in this minor have been approved by MCBAP (Michigan Certification Board for Addiction Professionals) and if the minor is successfully completed, students will have met all of the educational requirements necessary to apply for their CADC (Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor) credential.

For department information or additional degree requirements, go to the Social Work department page.

Total Credits Required 20*

Students who participate in a practicum in their major, may also count their hours toward the required experience hours needed in obtaining their CADC, as long as their practicum is within a licensed substance use disorder treatment program.

*This 20 credit minor is necessary in that if students complete it, all of the educational requirements necessary for them to apply for their CADC credential will be satisfied by NMU, assuring that the student will not have to search for other training opportunities after graduation.
