Percussion Ensemble Concert
The NMU Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Professor James A. Strain, will present
its annual spring semester concert on Saturday, April 1, 2023 at 3:00 p.m., in Reynolds Recital
Hall. The concert will be performed on standard percussion instruments such as drums, cymbals,
gongs, marimbas, xylophones, bells, vibraphones, chimes and timpani, as well as “found”
instruments. The music will include a variety of ethnic musical styles, including Michael Udow’s
“African Welcome Piece,” Arthur Lipner’s “City Soca.” Two percussion ensemble selections, by
Johanna Magdalena Beyer and John Cage, each written nearly 100 years ago, will feature the
“found” instruments, a common element of modern chamber music techniques. In addition, local
drummer/percussionist Trevor Rosten will be a featured soloist on David Mancini’s “Suite for
Drum Set and Percussion Ensemble.” The concert will also be live-streamed via the NMU
School of Music, Theater, and Dance Broadcasting Network, which can be found at

Admission is free and open to the public!
