The NMU Book Club and Lydia M. Olson Library Present...

The NMU Book Club and Lydia M. Olson Library are hosting a free reading group to inspire discussions about diversity and inclusion amongst students on campus. In their current partnership with NSSLHA, they are presenting the book Voice: A Stutterer's Odyssey by Scott Damian.

In collaboration with Interlibrary Loans to provide free copies of the books to students, the goal of these events is to create intellectual discussions in a diverse range of categories at no cost to students.

The first general-interest and introductory meeting will be help at 2:00pm on Friday, September 10th in the library. No material or pre-reading is necessary to attend the event!

The Lydia M. Olson Library will be offering Get to Know the Library tours to anyone interested! The tours will be held on Thursday, September 9th and Thursday, September 16th at 2:00 p.m. No RSPV is needed.

Join an enthusiastic student circulation worker for a 30-minute walking tour and learn about the numerous services the library offers and well as where things are located. (Fun Fact: We have more than just books!)

The tour events are a part of the fall Pick One Initiative, so remember to scan the QR code at the conclusion of the tour to earn your points!

NMU School of Nursing presents The Wildpups in the Lydia M. Olson Library, Thursday Sept. 16, 5-7pm

The Wildpups are a part of NMU’s new Animal Assisted Therapy program. If you miss your pup back at home or need a way to ease the anxieties that come with being a college student, the Wildpups are here to help. All are welcome to enjoy time with these licensed therapy dogs.

You will also have a volunteer opportunity to participate in research to help grow the field of Animal Assisted Therapy. Surveys will be available to fill out at the event, and those who participate are entered into a drawing to win an Amazon gift card! Registration is unlimited, and everyone is welcome to come.

Tracy Ross is an award-winning journalist and contributing editor at Backpacker Magazine, an ASME award–winning outdoor publication with 1.2 million readers. She is the author of The Source of All Things: A Memoir and her essays have been published in the U.S., England, South Africa, and Australia. Her essay “The Source of All Things” has won the National Magazine Award in 2009 and has been selected for inclusion in The Best American Sports Writing and The Best American Magazine Writing. Her Skiing magazine story “Our Country Comes Skiing in Peace” received a notable mention in Best American Travel Writing, and her work has also appeared in Outside and Women’s Sports Illustrated.  Ross’s assignments have taken her to the wilds of Alaska, the ski slopes of Iran, and the most remote reaches of Ecuador. She writes about exotic places and intriguing people, but mainly about the wilderness and how it intersects with the most important issues in our lives.

Reading followed by Q&A. Free and open to the public.

This program is a one hour, live stream lecture, by Adam Weinstein, a foreign policy expert from the Quincy Institute. The lecture, sponsored by the World Affairs Council, will focus on U.S. intervention in Afghanistan, the resurgence of the Taliban, and the fall of Kandahar and Kabul.
