Topic: "Suicide is the enemy, but not the target; How shifting our aim can help change the outcome."

David Woods Bartley is a nationally recognized suicide prevention speaker. In addition to giving two TED talks and being named a 2021 Mental Health Champion by the prestigious Steinberg Institute, David has presented more than 600 times to audiences across the United States, Canada, Central America, and India, giving in-person and virtual presentations on the subjects of suicide, male sexual trauma, mental health, organizational culture, and servant leadership.

Join us to celebrate the resilience and strength of Indigenous Peoples and cultures! Our Indigenous Peoples’ Day event will begin at 10am EST at the Land Acknowledgement Sign. The morning will consist of musical performances from the traditonal drum group “Morning Thunder”, and inspirational speakers including Kerri Schuiling, April Lindala, and Damon Panek. The Lydia M. Olson Library was selected as one of 50 U.S. libraries to present the touring version of the Americans and the Holocaust special exhibition, which opened in April 2018 at the Museum in Washington, D.C., during the Museum’s 25th anniversary.

As part of the exhibition, we will be hosting a discussion on Tuesday, October 13th of "Swastika Nation: Fritz Kuhn and the Rise and Fall of The German-American Bund" with writer, teacher and speaker, Arnie Bernstein.

The Lydia M. Olson Library was selected as one of 50 U.S. libraries to present the touring version of the Americans and the Holocaust special exhibition, which opened in April 2018 at the Museum in Washington, D.C., during the Museum’s 25th anniversary.

As part of the exhibition, we have partnered with the Peter White Public Library to show a 1994 film from PBS on Monday, October 17th. Join us in the Community Room of the Peter White Library at 7:30 p.m. for the film screening.  

Film Description: "Weaving together interviews, official photos and documents, home movies, and archival film, this 90-minute film explores the complex social and political factors that shaped America's response to the Holocaust. The story of Kurt Klein, who struggled with State Department red tape to free his parents from Europe, represents America's reaction to European Jews clamoring for rescue."

The Lydia M. Olson Library was selected as one of 50 U.S. libraries to present the touring version of the Americans and the Holocaust special exhibition, which opened in April 2018 at the Museum in Washington, D.C., during the Museum’s 25th anniversary.

As part of the exhibition, we have partnered with the Peter White Public Library to show Band of Brothers, episode 9: "Why We Fight" on Wednesday, October 19th. Join us in the Community Room of the Peter White Library at 6:30 p.m. for the film screening.  

Why We Fight depicts the liberation of a Nazi Concentration Camp. Following the screening, presenter Janeen Rastall will share her father's (Colonel David E. Pergrin) memories on the liberation of the concentration camp, Dachau, while the 291st was attached to the 99th Infantry Division. She will discuss this event’s lasting effect on his life. This event is free admission.

AMERICANS AND THE HOLOCAUST—HISTORY UNFOLDED: HOW LOCAL NEWSPAPERS COVERED KEY HOLOCAUST EVENTS

The Lydia M. Olson Library was selected as one of 50 U.S. libraries to present the touring version of the Americans and the Holocaust special exhibition, which opened in April 2018 at the Museum in Washington, D.C., during the Museum’s 25th anniversary.

Samantha Pynnonen, Catherine Oliver, and NMU students will present a local initiative of the History Unfolded project on Thursday, October 20th at 7:00 p.m. in Room 224 of Harden Hall, Northern Michigan University. 

History Unfolded is a citizen historian initiative to gather data on how local newspapers mentioning the Holocaust. Participants look in local newspapers for news and opinion about 46 different Holocaust-era events that took place in the United States and Europe, and submit articles they find to a national database, as well as information about newspapers that did not cover events.

 Join us this upcoming Friday (9/30) for a Remembrance Walk in honor of Orange Shirt Day! The Remembrance Walk has been organized by the Native American Student Association to honor all those affected by the Indian Boarding/Residential School System in the United States and Canada. The walk will begin at approximately 12:30pm EST at the fire site located in the Whitman woods, which is adjacent to Whitman Hall where the Center for Native American Studies is located.
