DeVos Art Museum

Join us on October 10, 2024, at 6 PM for an engaging talk with the artist, Jack Deo, followed by a reception.

This historic photographic exhibition features local legends, friends, neighbors, and everyday heroes of the past. Gestures, expressions, clothing, props, and backdrops reveal rich narratives about the subjects, photographers, and the times. The portraits were taken in Upper Peninsula photo studios between 1890 and 1910 by photographers including Charles Cole and Brainard F. Childs at Childs Art Gallery in Marquette and Ishpeming; John William Nara at Nara Studio in Calumet; Gustav A. Werner at Werner Studio in Marquette and Ishpeming, and Theodore Sexton at Sexton Studio in Garden.

Join us on Thursday, September 26, 2024, at 5:30 PM for an artist talk and reception at the DeVos Art Museum, featuring Liz Ward and Robert Ziebell as they discuss their work on display.

Across Time and Place features Liz Ward and Robert Ziebell's recent multi-media approaches to interpreting and understanding place. Residents of Eagle Harbor, Michigan, and San Antonio, Texas, their works examine the nuance of place and focus on the richness of our world today and yesterday.

Robert Ziebell is an American artist who has worked in the field for over thirty-five years. Ziebell is a lens-based artist who bridges still and motion imagery to create new visual languages. Ziebell's work has been shown in numerous US museums, galleries, film festivals, and abroad.

Liz Ward is an American artist who works across various media, scales, and sites. Her work explores the meaning of landscape through layers of human, natural, and environmental history, memory, and experience. Ward has been in over two hundred group shows and has completed over thirty solo exhibitions in galleries, alternative spaces, and museums.

Graduating seniors from the School of Art and Design will have their work displayed at the Devos Art Museum from April 20th to May 3rd 2024. This semester, the exhibition features students concentrating in digital cinema, graphic design, human-centered design, illustration, and photography.

On Friday, May 3, 2024, at 7pm, a reception will be held to celebrate the talent of the graduating seniors and to present the Gold, Silver and Bronze awards. Annual donors, the Friends of the DeVos Art Museum, sponsor the Gold Award. The NMU School of Art and Design sponsors Silver and Bronze awards.

Daily screenings in the Museum Monday through Saturday at 3 pm; Thursdays at 3 pm and 7 pm.

The legends behind this label and many others have been buried in folklore for nearly 40 years, but the vision created at Bell’s started a revolution in the craft brewing industry that changed what a beer label could be. This is the unconventional story of an artist whose love of fishing, Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, and beer found its way into every store in America

Graduating seniors from the School of Art and Design present their work. This semester, the exhibition features students concentrating in art education, ceramics, computer art, graphic design, human-centered design, and illustration.

Participating Artists Include: Brooke Ashworth, Ray Bonney, Josh Brehm, Kaitlynn Park, Destiny Smejkal, Olivia Vera, Ilah Wilson, and Elina Zhang.

Awards will be announced at 8 p.m.

DeVos Art Museum

Jessica Campbell is an interdisciplinary artist working in comics, fibers, painting, drawing, and performance. Drawing on a wide range of influences, including science fiction, art world politics, and her evangelical upbringing, Campbell explores ways to reflect heterogeneity through a combination of disparate media, subjects, and tone. Whether through cartoony depictions or the use of unorthodox material, her work often wields humor as a device for managing trauma. 

Her work will be on view at the Graci Gallery in Marquette in November.
