DeVos Art Museum

The Art Museum will be open 12- 4 pm on Saturday, October 8, and Sunday, October 9, for Family Weekend. The Museum is free and open to the public. There are currently three exhibitions on view, including New to the Collection: Lundmark and the Lake, Kinngait: Artists’ Reflections in Print, and Selections in Contemporary Illustration, The Up Focus: Linda King Ferguson & Lindsey Heiden, and Jan Manniko: The Last Place on Earth.

New to the Collection: Lundmark and the Lake, Kinngait: Artists’ Reflections in Print, and Selections in Contemporary Illustration - features three groups of new acquisitions from the permanent collection on display for the first time. The paintings, prints, and illustrations on view were acquired from 2020-2022 and highlight the community's ongoing dedication to building a permanent collection for NMU, Marquette, and the wider Upper Peninsula region.

UP Focus Exhibition: Linda King Ferguson & Lindsey Heiden

The UP Focus exhibition series features artists working in or influenced by the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Linda King Ferguson's and Lindsey Heiden's works are the focus of this year's exhibition. Each artist uses their intimate understanding of color, form, and materials to consider the concept of care and how it manifests. The connection to place may not be evident at first blush; the featured artists' work reflects, reacts, responds, and grows from the rich culture and environment where it was made.

Jan Manniko: The Last Place on Earth

Jan (Johnson) Manniko spent her life drawing and painting the people and places that define the Copper Country. This exhibition features nearly forty artworks from throughout Manniko’s career. Intricate, but steady-handed pen and ink drawings of mine buildings, exuberant plein air landscapes, and emotional depictions of people provide a tender decades-long look into the culture of the Copper Country.

She studied at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida, and The Art Institute of Chicago before returning to the Copper Country in the early 1960s. Until her passing in 2013, Jan Manniko lived and worked in Allouez, Michigan, alongside her husband Tom Manniko, a skilled woodcarver. They sold their wares alongside an eclectic array of antiques and found bottles in the iconic red building emblazoned with “The Last Place on Earth.”

Still Life Exhibition

A view of several artworks in the Still Life exhibition at the DeVos Art Museum at NMU.

DeVos Art Museum

Contemporary iterations of the still-life genre are presented through artworks manifesting impermanence, memory, slippages, familiarity, and the everyday. For nearly two years, we have experienced the still life – living in a time and space that is surreal, strange, familiar, edgy, and banal all at the same time. Searching for comfort in familiar things and feeling time pass, perhaps more slowly, we have looked in at ourselves and out at others through the convenience of an illuminated screen. We have learned to hold loved ones in our hearts and at a distance. Feeling the weight of our mortality has been difficult. Even though life is/was different, things keep moving along. After all, it is still life.
