Join us on Wednesday, October 13 at 7 p.m. Eastern as we welcome a panel of alumni entrepreneurs to discuss the process of launching and running a successful business. Alumni Relations is teaming up with Invent@NMU to feature its clients and mentors in an array of industries, from a creative marketing agency to an online marketplace for medical professionals. Panelists include:

  • Joe Thiel ‘03, CEO at Innovate Marquette SmartZone and executive director of Invent@NMU
  • Ian Altobello ‘19, founder of The Boreal Collective, a creative marketing company that connects people to education, businesses to business, and talent to opportunity
  • Britta Carlson ‘12, CEO and founder of Med Pros Share, an online marketplace for therapists and other licensed medical professionals to sell their resources, as well as search and buy other medical professionals resources

Corinne Bodeman, NMU instructor of entrepreneurship and management for the College of Business, will moderate the event and share audience questions LIVE with the panelists. The event is free and registration is required. Once you register, you will receive the link to the live stream.

Wildcat Fun Run: Homecoming

Wildcat Fun Run 2021

NMU Alumni Association

The NMU Alumni Association is excited to bring back the Wildcat Fun Run to Homecoming! This year, we are hosting a virtual and in-person 5K for the NMU community to show their Wildcat pride…near and far!

Registration is required. The cost is $25 for the NMU community (alumni, friends, parents, community members) and includes a Wildcat Fun Run t-shirt. Northern Michigan University will use a portion of the revenue generated by registrations for the event to support the NMU Food Pantry. NMU students can register for $15 (price includes a t-shirt) and student status will be verified at registration.

In-Person Fun Run Participants:
The in-person Fun Run will take place on Saturday, Oct. 2, on NMU’s campus, beginning and ending in the Academic Mall near the Wildcat Statue. Check-in begins at 8 a.m. where participants will receive a Wildcat Fun Run t-shirt and a bib number. The Fun Run begins at 8:30 a.m. and alumni, students, and the NMU community are welcome to run, walk or jog the 5K course. Water and a small snack will be provided for participants at the end of the run.

Virtual Fun Run Participants:
Participants can complete the 5K through Saturday, Oct. 9. Once each participant completes the race, they will send a photo to alumni@nmu.edu to be entered into a drawing to win a prize and be featured on our NMU Alumni Association social media channels. A t-shirt will be mailed to you.

We are excited to bring back a Wildcat tradition and celebrate Homecoming 2021 both in-person and virtually with our NMU alumni and friends. #alwaysNMU #GoCats

Northern Now: Artificial Intelligence and the Job Market

The Northern Michigan University Alumni Association is excited to continue Northern Now, a monthly digital event series for alumni and friends. Join us on Wednesday, January 13 at 7 p.m. ET as we welcome NMU faculty and alumni for a panel discussion on Artificial Intelligence. The panelists include Dr. Jeffrey Horn, associate professor of Computer Science and Anna Martin, a 2020 CS graduate and a current graduate student at University of Minnesota Duluth, and Adam Kall, a 2018 CS graduate and current director of technology at Kall Morris Inc., aiming to be the first company with a commercially viable product for collecting debris in orbit.

Each with different perspectives on the topic, the panelists will discuss the trend of machine learning and consequences on the job market, particularly pertaining to jobs in the Computer Science field.

Attendees will be able to ask questions to the panelists live. The event is free and registration is required. Once you register, you will receive the link to the live stream.

Tuesday, Dec. 1. Join us for a digital program throughout the day as we hear from President Erickson,
celebrate student success, and come together to support NMU and show our Wildcat pride.

10 a.m.: Coffee Chat with President Erickson and NMU Student Donor-funded Scholarship Recipients
Hear a message from President Erickson about the impact YOU have on our students, campus facilities,
academic programs, athletic teams, and the overall NMU experience. Students will also share how
scholarships have enabled them to continue their education.
12:30 p.m.: Check-In at the NMU Food Pantry with Assistant Dean of Students and Food Pantry

CASH OVER CANS! The NMU Food Pantry is encouraging alumni and friends to donate cash instead of
canned items this year. Now more than ever, our NMU students need our help to be sure their basic
needs are met so they can focus on learning.
2 p.m. Check-In at the BEAR Center with Director Jacob Daar
Learn about the Behavioral, Education, Assessment and Research (BEAR) Center and how the recent
Michigan Health Endowment Fund has allowed it to expand its services. Support from donors like you
can help the center continue to make a major difference in families’ lives.
5 p.m. Happy Hour with Associate Dean Joe Lubig and Dean Carol Johnson
Join Dr. Joe Lubig, associate dean of Education, Leadership and Public Service and Dr. Carol Johnson,
dean of the College of Business, as we raise a glass to YOU for your continued support in NMU. They will
share the impact donations have on their departments and the importance of giving back so we can
continue to make NMU an excellent place to learn, explore, compete, and discover.
