What better way to welcome summer than with delicious campfire recipes? Join us on Wednesday, June 8 at 7 p.m. Eastern as we once again welcome Chef Alden Griffus CCC ’10, executive chef of Dining Services at Northern Michigan University, for a cooking segment. Chef Alden, joined by current Hospitality Management student Trixie Maguran Jacobson, will showcase their favorite campfire dinners that can be made either in your kitchen or over a campfire.

Participants will receive the recipes ahead of time and audience questions will be shared live with the chefs. The event is free and registration is required. Once you register, you will receive the link to the live stream.

Join us on Wednesday, April 13 at 7 p.m. Eastern for a family-friendly book reading with author, TikTok influencer, and alumnus Mylan Murphy ’12, ’14. Mylan will begin by reading his motivational children’s book, It Only Takes 1, which tells his story of becoming an entrepreneur at the young age of 13. The interactive event will continue as Mylan answers questions about being a TikTok influencer, building his Motivated by Mylan brand, and how to overcome challenges along the way.

Join us on Wednesday, March 9 at 7 p.m. Eastern as we welcome a panel of alumni from the NMU School of Art & Design! All working in various areas of the industry, these alumni will provide insight on how their education at NMU prepared them for their careers, reminisce about the exciting projects they worked on during their time as a student, and share their plans for the future.

Panelists include:

• Sabrina Langdon ’14, owner of Sabrina Leigh Studios, a local wedding photography company
• Niikah Hatfield ’20, owner of Niik Creative Co., a local handmade ceramics and home décor business
• Christopher LaRose ’14, director of UX/strategy at Elegant Seagulls, a digital creative agency

Audience questions will be shared live with the artists and designers. The event is free and registration is required.

Students are invited to join NMU alumni to learn valuable networking tips and put them into practice during an interactive workshop! We'll begin with a brief "networking tips 101" session with NMU Career Services, followed by an opportunity to put what you've learned to the test. Students will experience three breakout sessions, pairing them up with NMU alumni and fellow students. During each session, students will have five to ten minutes to find commonalities when perhaps there aren’t obvious ones (like major, job, family background, etc.) and work to develop their personal and professional “elevator pitch”.

Join us on Wednesday, February 9 at 7 p.m. Eastern as we partner with the NMU Center for Rural Health and welcome a panel of experts to discuss the social determinants of health, which are the conditions and environments that affect a wide range of health, functioning, and quality-of-life outcomes and risks. Elise Bur, the director of the NMU Center for Rural Health, will moderate the conversation, focusing on some of the social determinants of health we experience in the U.P. The panelists will discuss the Community Health Worker profession, what impact they have on the health and well-being of individuals, and particularly how Community Health Workers are addressing food insecurity in our area, one of the social determinants of health.

Panelists include:

• Shannon Lijewski, NCHW, MBA, CHCEF, principal of Everyday Life Consulting, an agency that focuses on the development and training of Community Health Workers 
• Alazar “Zar” Chroman, a local Community Health Worker with UPHS/AdvantagePoint Health Alliance
• Sarah Monte ‘08, outreach director for Marquette Food Co-op and NMU alumna

All working in various areas of the industry, these alumni will provide insight on how their education at NMU prepared them for their careers, reminisce about the exciting projects they worked on during their time as a student, and share their plans for the future.

Panelists include:

• Michael Detroit ’85, executive producer of Playhouse on the Square, a 52-year-old non-profit professional resident theatre company located in Memphis, Tenn.
• Janel Rayome ’04, administrative director of Ballet Tech, a school of intensive classical dance training in New York City
• Kelly Moscinski ’07, ‘09 owner and head of casting at The Voicecaster, the first voiceover casting company in the country
• Travis Moscinski ’09, professional actor/voice actor and co-owner of The Voicecaster, an LA-based casting and recording studio

Bill Digneit ‘08, department head and co-director of NMU Theatre and Dance, and Jill Grundstrom ’04, ’20, assistant professor and co-director of NMU Theatre and Dance, will moderate the event and share audience questions LIVE with the artists. Nick VanCourt ’04, co-founder and head brewer of Barrel + Beam, Andy Langlois ’95, co-founder and brewsician of Blackrocks Brewery, and Jake Shea ’08, lead brewer of Ore Dock Brewing Company, will chat about the brewing industry, what sets their breweries apart, and how their education at NMU has helped them in their endeavors.

Kylie Bunting ‘11, co-founder of Barley’s Angels U.P., the women’s craft beer education and appreciation group, will moderate the event and share audience questions LIVE with the panelists. The NMU Alumni Association is excited to bring back the Wildcat Fun Run to Homecoming! This year, we are hosting a virtual and in-person 5K for the NMU community to show their Wildcat pride…near and far!

Registration is required. The cost is $25 for the NMU community (alumni, friends, parents, community members) and includes a Wildcat Fun Run t-shirt. Northern Michigan University will use a portion of the revenue generated by registrations for the event to support the NMU Food Pantry. NMU students can register for $15 (price includes a t-shirt) and student status will be verified at registration.

In-Person Fun Run Participants:
The in-person Fun Run will take place on Saturday, Oct. 2, on NMU’s campus, beginning and ending in the Academic Mall near the Wildcat Statue. Check-in begins at 8 a.m. where participants will receive a Wildcat Fun Run t-shirt and a bib number. The Fun Run begins at 8:30 a.m. and alumni, students, and the NMU community are welcome to run, walk or jog the 5K course. Water and a small snack will be provided for participants at the end of the run.

Virtual Fun Run Participants:
Participants can complete the 5K through Saturday, Oct. 9. Once each participant completes the race, they will send a photo to alumni@nmu.edu to be entered into a drawing to win a prize and be featured on our NMU Alumni Association social media channels. A t-shirt will be mailed to you.

Back by popular demand! Join us on Wednesday, June 9 at 7 p.m. Eastern as we once again welcome Chef Alden Griffus CCC ’10, executive chef of Dining Services at Northern Michigan University, for a summer send-off cooking segment. For our last Northern Now of the semester, Chef Griffus will share her favorite summer recipes in time for the warm weather. Scott Bousson ’11, operations manager of Dining Services will also be joining Chef Griffus to share his take on the best recipes for the season.
