Administration of Outdoor Recreation and Nature-based Tourism

The School of Health and Human Performance offers a master of science degree in the Administration of Outdoor Recreation and Nature-based Tourism. The program is designed to increase professional competence in the outdoor recreation field, as well as nature-based tourism, through the study of administration, sustainability, the history associated with the field, and legal and ethical issues. The student will complete a creative project or a thesis in their area of interest under the supervision of an advisor. This program is designed to prepare the student for creative work in the field of Outdoor Recreation and Nature-based Tourism or for further study at the doctoral level. 

Applied Sport Psychology

The School of Health and Human Performance offers a master of science degree in Applied Sport Psychology.  The program is a comprehensive program that prepares students with the knowledge, skills and practical applications for success in the fields of sport psychology, mental performance consulting and sport coaching. This program addresses the eight content areas and 400-hour mentorship required for graduates to sit for the Certified Mental Performance Consultant exam through the Association for Applied Sport Psychology. In addition, students in the Clinical Sport Psychology track will meet the State of Michigan education and practicum requirements to earn a Master’s Limited Psychologist Licensed Psychologist by completing the required three courses and a 500-hour psychology practicum. Courses specifically address topics that include, applied sport psychology, positive psychology, theory in sport, research and ethics in sport psychology, gender and diversity issues in sport, and positive coaching. In addition, it prepares students that are focused on coaching to motivate, teach, support and lead athletes to success using ethical and positive behaviors.

Athletic Training

The School of Health and Human Performance offers a master of science degree in athletic training.

This program is offered in 2 formats:

  • 3+2 with undergraduate in Sports Science
  • Stand alone - Masters in AT for students who have already completed an undergraduate degree.

The 3 + 2 program that will award the student a bachelor of science (in sports science) degree and a master of science in Athletic Training when completed.  These students will meet all pre-admission requirements at NMU and apply to the master’s program during the fall semester of their third year. If accepted, the student will begin the master’s program in the summer between their third and fourth years.

Students wishing to transfer into this program will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Students who have already completed a baccalaureate degree either at NMU or at another institution may also apply for admission.

Athletic Training Retention Requirements

In order for students to retain their status in the master’s in athletic training program, students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Students falling below the minimum 3.0 GPA requirement will be put on program probation and will have ONE semester to elevate his/her GPA back to the required 3.0. Students failing to regain the 3.0 required retention GPA after one semester of program probation will be dismissed from the program. Students may appeal program dismissal according to university policy as identified in the NMU Student Handbook. Exercise Science at NMU

The School of Health and Human Performance offers a master of science degree in exercise science. The master of science degree in exercise science is a non-teaching degree program intended for students with undergraduate backgrounds in athletic training, biological sciences, health, physical education, physiology, physical therapy and sports science. It is designed to provide the student with a working knowledge in the physiological, biomechanical and nutritional aspects of human movement and exertion.

Exercise Science Program Requirements

The master of science degree in exercise science requires a base of 17 course credits that provide a foundation upon which the student may explore special areas of interest related to exercise science. Elective credits enable specialization in areas such as physiology, physical fitness, biomechanics and research. In addition, students must also submit either two formal file papers to the School of Health and Human Performance (non-thesis option) or complete a four-credit research thesis (ES 599A). A variety of elective courses are available in advanced human physiology, biochemistry, nutrition, electrocardiography, laboratory procedures, sport biomechanics, physical training program design, exercise for special populations and sport psychology.
