ED 462 Literature for Young Adults 3 cr.

• Prerequisites: Junior standing

A comprehensive study of books for young adults, designed for secondary school teachers. Needs and interests of adolescents are studied in conjunction with the application of selection principles to fiction and nonfiction of all types. Emphasis is placed on developmental reading for the accelerated, the average and the reluctant student.

ED 500 Educational Research 3 cr.

• Prerequisites: Graduate standing

An introduction to the field of educational research. Students will design an educational research study, complete a literature review, and learn how to interpret research results and present research findings.

ED 504 Psychology of Education 2 cr.

A comparative study of learning theories. The analysis is made with reference to the practical application of learning theories to the process of instruction.

ED 505 Measurement and Evaluation 2 cr.

An investigation of systems of measurement and evaluation with an emphasis on use in classroom situations. Topics include computation of selected basic statistics, test reliability and validity, and interpretation of test data.

ED 506 Cultural Foundations of Education I: Historical and Philosophical Dimensions 3 cr.

• Prerequisites: Graduate Standing

Examines the relationship between theory and practice in education, emphasizing the ways in which practice is a direct reflection of theories, both explicit and implicit.

ED 507 Cultural Foundations of Education II: Social Justice and American Schools 3 cr.

• Prerequisites: Graduate standing

Examines the roles schools play in the evolving nature of American society, the social and institutional nature of American schools, and the ways they are shaped by and reflect social norms and serve social purposes.

ED 508 Research Analysis 2 cr.

• Prerequisites: ED 505 or PY 320 or PY 305 or MA 171 or consent of instructor

A survey of research methodology in the behavioral sciences, emphasizing its application to education. Topics include use and interpretation of experimental designs, research proposal writing and research report evaluation.

ED 509 Proposal Writing 2 cr.

Provides insight into and experience in the various phases of proposal writing. Students demonstrate proficiency by developing a grant proposal which merits submission for funding.

ED 511 Trends in the Teaching of Language Arts 2 cr.

Significant issues, trends and challenges in the teaching of the English language arts (i.e., listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing and representing) will be considered. Integrating the language arts into other subject areas to improve student learning and achievement will be the focus.

ED 512 Trends in the Teaching of Science 2 cr.

A study of the objectives, scope and sequence of the science program in the elementary grades. Includes content and materials of instruction, the method of scientific discovery, and evaluation.

ED 516 Introduction to Student Affairs 4 cr.

• Graded: A/F

This course examines the Student Affairs profession and its place in American higher education. The history, roles and functions of the profession; the skills and competencies necessary; and current issues.

ED 517 Recent Children's Literature 2 cr.

A study of select recent literature for children, recent books, articles, and ideas about children’s literature, and articles, and ideas about the teaching of children’s literature. Emphasizes current issues, trends and contemporary responses to basic questions.

ED 518 Seminar in Elementary/Secondary Education: Reading 3 cr.

Opportunities for the concentrated study of selected professional education issues in reading education.

ED 522 Curriculum Development 3 cr.

This course gives students an understanding of the concept of change, curriculum leadership, methods of curriculum development and involvement in the curriculum development process. Topics include change agentry, developmental methods, the teacher’s role in curriculum innovations and comparative curriculum development.

ED 523 Measuring and Evaluating Training 3 cr.  (3-0-0)

Course content is designed to prepare trainers to conduct effective evaluations of the training effort.  Attention is directed to developing and implementing an evaluation plan, designing appropriate data collection instruments, employing data collection instruments, analyzing data, and communicating results.

ED 524 Adult Learner 3 cr.  (3-0-0)

Attention focuses on the processes and methods, including helping theories, employed by adult learning facilitators.

ED 530 Introduction to Educational Leadership 3 cr.

Provides a review of the foundations of organizational theory, including definitions and application to organization behavior. Included is an overview of classic organization behavior and human relations theory. A concentration on leadership, motivation, change, conflict and power is applied to school improvement planning and educational leadership.

ED 531 College Student Development 4 cr.

This course examines pedagogical student development theories and their application to Student Affairs practice in the delivery of programs and services.  Characteristics of today’s diverse college students and the effects of these characteristics on their development will be assessed as they relate to best practices in pedagogy.

ED 532 The Principalship 3 cr.

Administrative strategies and practices of organization, supervision and management appropriate to elementary, middle and high school are studied.

ED 533 School and Community Relations 2 cr.

Stresses the critical need for educators to involve the various public school districts as partners in the education enterprise. Provides practical ideas and procedures for improving both our schools and the perception the public has of them.

ED 534 Administering Special Programs 2 cr.

A review of special program responsibility areas for school administrators. Current laws and administrative procedures for each of the specific areas are discussed. Includes an overview of best practice considerations of which principals need to be aware.

ED 541A Improvement of Instruction 3 cr.

The problems, principles and techniques involved in the improvement of instruction. The roles of the supervisor, teachers and other school personnel in the improvement of instruction are stressed.

ED 541B Supervision of Instruction 3 cr.

A review of the current research on and practice of supervising and evaluating teachers with an emphasis on clinical and developmental supervision for improving teacher’s classroom performance.

ED 543 School Finance 3 cr.

Issues basic to the development of a financial program for public education in the United States, and Michigan in particular, are examined.

ED 544 School Law 3 cr.

Provides an overview of topics about which school administrators should be knowledgeable. Includes an examination of the constitutional and legal bases of education in the United States, with an emphasis on Michigan.
