Majors: Spanish major, International Studies major with a Global Studies concentration
What will you miss most about being an NMU student?
I’ll miss the professors who’ve supported me, the friends I’ve made, being excited for class every single day and being so close to the lake.
What were your favorite moments as a Languages, Literatures & International Studies student?
Meeting my best friends in Spanish class, cooking empanadas at Profe Arenillas house, getting to know all of my professors, studying abroad, working as Media Outreach Coordinator with the best people ever, my first Spanish class at NMU with Dr. Compton where I met a lifelong friend and found my love for Perú & archeology.
What was your favorite course in the LLIS department?
Spanish 312 with Profe Arenillas. I loved the class because I learned so much about Latin America as a whole. The culture, the history, everything. There was so much I didn’t know, and it really opened my mind to the complexities of each country and region. Also IP490 was amazing. It was my first opportunity to meet some of the other international studies majors. I learned so much about the world and different regions. I got to stay up-to-date on world news, I was able to learn from all of the other students and the regions they studied abroad in while also sharing my own experiences. This course was crucial for my development.
If you met an incoming student, what advice would you give them?
Be brave, take risks! You’re smarter than you think you are, and even if you don’t know how you’re going to do something big, you just need to take the first step. Also meet as many people as you can and have an open mind. You can learn from everyone, even if you don’t agree with them.
