Steps NMU is taking for a safe return to campus this fall

Communicating the university's efforts with the community is a top priority. The following list includes some of the steps we are taking as we plan for the start of the fall 2020 semester:

Adjusting the Fall Semester Schedule

Adjusting the fall semester schedule. Our start date has moved up one week (Monday, August 17) and will end on November 24, prior to the traditional Thanksgiving break. Students will return for the winter semester on January 11, 2021.

Modified Move-In Process

Our move-in process for campus residents has been modified. It will occur over several days and the number of students and individuals on campus and in the residence halls at any given time will be limited.

Testing of the NMU Community

Returning to campus will include COVID-19 testing for all employees and students. NMU will conduct these tests from August 3-August 15 at the Northern Center.

Requirement of Facial Coverings

Masks are mandated in all non-private indoor locations on campus and in outdoor areas where social distancing cannot be practiced.

Enhanced Health Center Capabilities

The NMU Health Center has added staff and equipment to handle the additional testing and treatment needs of our campus community members.

Complementary Face Coverings

NMU is providing two reusable face coverings to all students, faculty and staff at no cost. There will also be disposable masks available throughout campus in the event that someone forgets or loses theirs. The NMU Bookstore is also selling branded masks

Modifying or Canceling Events

Many events have been modified to meet the recommended CDC guidelines. Some have been canceled. View the full list of event updates on this page.

Supporting Local Businesses

At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, NMU launched the Wildcats Mean Business campaign as a means of raising up the businesses that support NMU events and programming.

Additionally, NMU has assembled NMU-branded COVID-19 related signage such as "Mask Required" and "6 feet apart" signage. These are available for any business to use free of charge. Signage requests can be submitted to commark@nmu.edu.
