Navigating the Pandemic

What Northern Michigan University does to mitigate risk for COVID-19 spread has an impact on the Marquette community. Northern officials are meeting and collaborating regularly with the Marquette County Health Department and Upper Peninsula Health System to share resources, expertise and talent. Follow Northern Today, the NMU news blog, to learn of ongoing collaborative efforts.

Adjusting the Winter Semester Schedule

The start date for our winter semester was moved back to Tuesday, January 19 and we have eliminated our traditional spring break to limit the amount of traveling the campus community members will do this semester. The winter semester ends on May 1.

Testing of the NMU Community

Returning to campus included COVID-19 testing for all employees and students. NMU conducted these tests from January 6-18 at the Northern Center.

Requirement of Facial Coverings

Masks are mandated in all non-private indoor locations on campus and in outdoor areas where social distancing cannot be practiced.

Enhanced Health Center Capabilities

The NMU Health Center has added staff and equipment to handle the additional testing and treatment needs of our campus community members.

Complimentary Face Coverings

NMU is providing two reusable face coverings to all students, faculty and staff at no cost. There will also be disposable masks available throughout campus in the event that someone forgets or loses theirs. The NMU Bookstore is also selling branded masks

Modifying or Canceling Events

Many events have been modified to meet the recommended CDC guidelines. Some have been canceled. View the full list of event updates on this page.

Supporting Local Businesses

At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, NMU launched the Wildcats Mean Business campaign as a means of raising up the businesses that support NMU events and programming.

Additionally, NMU has assembled NMU-branded COVID-19 related signage such as "Mask Required" and "6 feet apart" signage. These are available for any business to use free of charge. Signage requests can be submitted to commark@nmu.edu.
