ATR 110 Introduction to Athletic Training 2 cr.  (2-0-0)

An introduction to the fields of athletic training and sports science including professional organizations, career alternatives, as well as review the basic knowledge, skills and abilities as they apply to these disciplines.

ATR 125 Emergency Care for the Health Professional 2 cr.  (1-0-2)
  • Offered: Fall Winter
Provides students with instruction that will enable AHA Certification in CPR for the Health Care Provider. This includes certification in adult, child and infant CPR (1 person/2 person), rescue breathing, obstructed airway care, use of protective mask and bag valve and AED application. Instruction also in spine boarding, splinting, wound care, crutch use, primary survey, vital sign assessment, and OSHA compliance.
ATR 310 Clinical Observation in Athletic Training I 1 cr.  (0-0-2)

This course is intended and required for students wishing to pursue the Master’s in Athletic Training program at NMU. This course will allow students to be placed into clinical observation experiences at the various on-campus athletic training facilities. 

ATR 311 Clinical Observation in Athletic Training II 1 cr.  (0-0-2)

  • Prerequisites: ATR 310.

This course is intended and required for students wishing to pursue the Master’s in Athletic Training program at NMU. This course will allow students to be placed into clinical observation experiences at the various on-campus athletic training facilities.

ATR 410 Athletic Healthcare Administration 2 cr.

  • Prerequisites: ATR 110 and ATR 241.

Athletic trainers function within the context of a complex healthcare system. Students will demonstrate an understanding of risk management, legal considerations, governmental regulation, healthcare delivery mechanisms, insurance, reimbursement, documentation, patient privacy, human resources, and facility management.

ATR 420 Orthopedic Assessment I 4 cr.  (3-0-2)
  • Offered: Contact Department
  • Prerequisites: BI 207, BI 208 and ATR 421.

Techniques used in the evaluation of athletic injuries to the foot, ankle, knee, hip and lower spinal region. Emphasis is placed on taking a medical history, performing a medical observation, physical palpation, functional and special testing, and injury pathology and injury epidemiology. Techniques and concepts are presented with a strong focus on the importance of the use of an evidence-based approach to orthopedic assessment practices.

ATR 421 Orthopedic Assessment II 4 cr.  (3-0-2)

  • Prerequisites: ATR 420.

 A continuation of ATR 420 with an emphasis on the upper quadrant of the body including the hand, wrist, elbow, shoulder, neck, head and trunk. 

ATR 441 Principles of Athletic Training 3 cr.  (2-0-2)
  • Offered: Contact Department
  • Prerequisites: BI 207 and BI 208.

Students will receive initial training in injury recognition, injury prevention, injury evaluation and injury treatment procedures. The focus with be on musculoskeletal injury, but will also cover such topics as physiology if injury, sport equipment fitting, risk management, etc.

 

ATR 442 Orthopedic Taping and Bracing 2 cr.  (1-0-2)

  • Prerequisites: BI 207 and BI 208.

Students will learn and develop skills in orthopedic taping and bracing with specific emphasis on common techniques used in both the athletic and clinical settings. Students will practice application skills in a lab setting. Instruction will include, but not be limited to prophylactic techniques, casting/splint design for specific orthopedic injury, fitting and application of surgical braces, etc.

ATR 450 Principles of Manual Therapies 3 cr.  (2-0-2)

  • Prerequisites: BI 104, ES 317 or instructor approval.

The students use the principles of manual therapies to deepen their anatomical and biomechanical understanding of the human body. They will learn how to use this knowledge to assist their patients through manual therapy.

ATR 460 Therapeutic Exercise 4 cr.  (3-0-2)

  • Prerequisites: BI 207, BI 208 and ATR 420.

This course will teach theory and hands-on skills necessary for the integration and application of therapeutic exercise into the treatment and rehabilitation protocols used by athletic trainers and other sports medicine professionals. This course will cover the use of (but not necessarily limited to) the following therapeutic interventions such as techniques to reduce pain, limit edema, restore joint mobility, restore muscle extensibility, restore neuromuscular function, improve strength, endurance, speed and power, improve balance, neuromuscular control, coordination and agility, improve gait, posture and body mechanics, improve cardiovascular fitness, understand functional exercises (eg: sports specific activity), develop exercises which comprise home based programs, utilize aquatic therapy rehabilitation techniques, etc.

ATR 480 Therapeutic Modalities 3 cr.  (2-0-2)

  • Prerequisites: ATR 420.

This course will teach theory and hands-on skills necessary for the integration and application of therapeutic modalities into the treatment and rehabilitation protocols used by athletic trainers and other sports medicine professionals. This course will cover the use of (but not necessarily limited to) the following modalities: ultrasound, electrical muscle stimulation, TENS, iontophoresis, laser, traction and other mechanical modalities, cryo/thermotherapy, hydrotherapy, diathermy, biofeedback, massage, etc.  

ATR 485 Evidence Based Practice and Clinical Decision-Making in Athletic Training 4 cr.  (4-0-0)

This course is designed to help students develop a clear understanding of the use of evidence based practice concepts in healthcare so that they may deliver the most effective patient care in the field. Students will engage in class activities that require them to search the literature for the most up to date, effective clinical practices and learn how to evaluate the research to determine and apply such concepts as specificity, sensitivity, diagnostic accuracy, clinical prediction rules, etc.

ATR 490 Seminar in Athletic Training 2 cr.
  • Offered: Fall
  • Prerequisites: Senior standing.

Students will be exposed to current topics of interest and issues in athletic training. Continuing education will be stressed. Developing discussion skills in athletic training will also be reinforced. A unit on counseling and a unit on research are included.

ATR 492A Advanced Practicum in Athletic Training I 4 cr.  (1-0-9)
  • Offered: Fall
  • Prerequisites: ATR 392B.

A clinical course designed to allow students, under direct supervision, to utilize all skills in which they have achieved competence. Particular emphasis is on record keeping, communicating with the sports medicine team and decision making.

ATR 499 Internship in Athletic Training 2-8 cr.
  • Offered: Fall Winter Summer
  • Graded: S/U
  • Prerequisites: Instructor's permission.
Designed for upper-level athletic training students who have completed a majority of program competencies and proficiencies and are ready to apply their skills in the field. This course is also appropriate for graduate-level students who are pursuing a career in the field of athletic training.
