HON 001 Honors Program Completion 0 cr.

  • Graded: S/U
  • Prerequisites: Enrollment in the honors program, senior status, completion of core and cognate honors courses.

Students register in this course during the semester in which they complete the honors program requirements by co-enrolling in a senior thesis course.

HON 101 Origins of Western Values-Antiquity 4 cr.

  • Prerequisites: Enrollment in the honors program.

This interdisciplinary course investigates the origins of the ideas and values central to Western culture from antiquity through primary sources. Writing revisions and library research will be required.

HON 111 Fine Art: Modern Sources 4 cr.  (4-0-0)
  • Offered: Fall Winter
  • Prerequisites: Enrollment in Honors Program.

This interdisciplinary course investigates the aesthetic theories and art forms that influenced music, literature, and/or the visual and performing arts with a focus on the Modern West. Writing revisions and library research will be required.

HON 201 Origins of Western Values - Medieval to Modern 4 cr.

  • Prerequisites: Enrollment in honors program.

This interdisciplinary course investigates the origins of the ideas and values central to Western culture since the Middle Ages through primary sources. Critical writing with revisions and library research will be required.

HON 211 The Social Sciences 4 cr.
  • Offered: Winter
  • Prerequisites: Sophomore status, successful completion of the first-year honors sequence, and enrollment in the honors program.

This interdisciplinary course introduces the evolution, application and social impact of major ideas and developments in the social sciences such as anthropology, economics, geography, history, political science and sociology.

HON 301 World Cultures: A Humanities Perspective 4 cr.
  • Offered: Fall Winter
  • Prerequisites: Junior standing and enrollment in the honors program or NMU GPA greater than or equal to 3.0.

Critical reading and comparative analysis will be used to explore a non-western European culture from a humanities perspective. The discipline through which a specific culture and its people are explored will vary with faculty expertise.

HON 302 World Cultures: Social Sciences 4 cr.
  • Offered: Fall Winter
  • Prerequisites: Junior standing and enrollment in the honors program or NMU GPA greater than or equal to 3.0.

Critical reading and comparative analysis will be used to explore a non-western European culture from a social science perspective. The discipline (anthropology, economics, geography, health, history, political science, and/or sociology) through which a specific culture and its people are explored will vary with faculty expertise.

HON 495 Special Topics 2-4 cr.
  • Offered: Fall Winter
  • Prerequisites: Instructor's permission and junior standing.

Variable content, depending upon the specialties of the faculty and special needs of the students.

HON 498 Directed Studies 1-4 cr.
  • Offered: Fall Winter
  • Prerequisites: Enrollment in the Honors Program, instructor's permission and junior standing.

Directed individual studies. This course requires regular meetings with the instructor throughout the semester.  The course will vary depending on the needs of the student and the expertise of the instructor.
