Introduction to Food Studies

SO 120 Introduction to Food Studies 4 cr.

Examines the complex social, economic, and cultural relations that determine what we eat. Analyzes how problems in the food system, including environmental degradation, labor injustices, and unequal access to healthy food are social problems that reflect an ongoing tension between the agency of individual eaters and the power of institutions and social structures.

Michigan Residential Building Codes

CN 252m Michigan Residential Building Codes 1 cr.  (1-0-0)

This course introduces students to basic requirements and processes for compliance with building codes and ordinances with regards to Michigan Residential Building Codes. It also provides a general understanding of the relationships and procedures for various regulatory agencies associated with different compliance requirements; including, but not limited to, plan review and inspection processes.

Computer Art: Production Practices

AD 434B Computer Art: Production Practices 4 cr.

Development of concepts and methods for computer art with a focus on portfolio development. Topics may include advanced animation, scripting, game development, motion capture, digital sculpting, and advanced rendering with emphasis on professional production practices.

Alternative Materials in Applied Design

AD 424A Alternative Materials in Applied Design 4 cr.

This course is a continuation of and expansion upon the skills and techniques covered in previous woodworking courses, while further developing personal creativity and design sensibilities. Emphasis is placed on the methods of designing and building functional objects with non-traditional construction materials including metal, cement, fabric, foam, paper and plastic.

Drawing/Painting: Seminar II

AD 420B Drawing/Painting: Seminar II 4 cr.

Students will plan, research, and execute self-driven projects. The content of these projects will follow consistent and coherent themes determined by the student, which may also be related to their Senior Capstone Project. Course content will be supported by readings discussion and supported opportunities for professional development in the field.

Woodworking: Form, Volume, and Function

AD 324B Woodworking: Form, Volume, and Function 4 cr.

Continued development of a professional portfolio through the production of new works in the studio. Emphasis is placed on understanding the various parameters of design, aesthetics, and relevance to contemporary standards in the field. Use of solid wood and plywood as a primary media is emphasized, while learning new techniques to explore volume and form in functional objects.

Advanced Drawing/Painting: Research Strategies

AD 320B Advanced Drawing/Painting: Research Strategies 4 cr.

Students will produce several bodies of work that demonstrate understanding of a range of research strategies related to personal, cultural, and historical themes. Studio work and terminology will be informed by readings, discussions, critiques, and presentations. Choice of media will largely be determined by the student.
