Pre-Advanced Integrated Skills

ELI 044 Pre-Advanced Integrated Skills 4 cr.

Students will demonstrate the ability to interact and work in a classroom setting on various themed projects while further developing their language skills in “real-life” situations. These projects may include role-plays, problem-solving, gathering information, etc. Students will participate in 2-3 theme-based projects throughout the semester.

Pre-Advanced Writing and Grammar

ELI 043 Pre-Advanced Writing and Grammar 7 cr.

In this pre-advanced writing course, students will continue to develop their competence in writing various types of academic papers. Students will be provided with the necessary instruction to write 2-3 page academic essays in APA format that are well supported by correctly citing 1-2 sources. The course will also help students increase their grammatical accuracy which they will be expected to demonstrate through meaning in their own writing. In addition, students in this course will engage in the steps of the writing process, including drafting and revising. The course will prepare students for advanced level writing requirements such as exam essays by requiring timed writing activities on a bi-weekly basis to improve writing fluency. Students will collaborate with classmates to complete a variety of assignment types. Finally, students will improve their test-taking skills in order to successfully improve their scores on standardized language tests (i.e. TOEFL, IELTS).

Pre-Advanced Reading and Vocabulary

ELI 042 Pre-Advanced Reading and Vocabulary 7 cr.

This course will provide students with the necessary instruction to increase reading fluency and comprehension of pre-advanced level academic texts. In addition, in this course, students will engage with, understand and respond to authentic texts in a more thoughtful and critical way. Students will practice and engage in a variety of reading strategies to aid comprehension of a variety of authentic texts. By reading an independent novel, students will gain experience identifying a variety of literary features. Students will be expected to demonstrate a pre-advanced level understanding of vocabulary and meaning and will collaborate with classmates to complete a variety of assignment types. Finally, students will improve their test-taking skills in order to successfully improve their scores on standardized language tests (i.e. TOEFL, IELTS).

Pre-Advanced Speaking and Listening

ELI 041 Pre-Advanced Speaking and Listening 7 cr.

In this course, students will further develop and refine their listening and speaking skills necessary for academic success and for appropriate and confident participation in social communication in an English-speaking community. In preparation for academic study at an American University, this course will provide students with daily opportunities to engage in small group and class discussion on academic topics while developing the necessary skills and resources to ensure comprehension. Instruction will focus primarily on the development of fluency in the student’s spoken communication, but will emphasize accuracy in production at a pre-advanced level. Students will improve their note-taking skills by learning and practicing new strategies for listening to and comprehending academic lectures on various topics. In addition, students will prepare and deliver formal academic speeches/presentations throughout the course. They will collaborate with classmates to complete a variety of assignment types. Finally, students will improve their test-taking skills in order to successfully improve their scores on standardized language tests (i.e. TOEFL, IELTS).

Intermediate Integrated Skills

ELI 034 Intermediate Integrated Skills 4 cr.

This is a project-based course. Students will demonstrate the ability to interact and work in a classroom setting on various themed projects while further developing their language skills in “real-life” situations. These projects may include role-plays, problem-solving, gathering information, etc. Students will participate in 2-3 theme-based projects throughout the semester. 

Intermediate Writing and Grammar

ELI 033 Intermediate Writing and Grammar 7 cr.

In this intermediate writing course, students will develop competency in writing multi-paragraph academic essays. The course will help students increase their grammatical accuracy which they will be expected to demonstrate through meaning in their own writing. Students in this course will develop strategies for avoiding plagiarism including summarizing, paraphrasing and using basic APA formatting and citations in their writing.  In addition, students in this course will engage in the steps of the writing process, including drafting and revising. This course will prepare students for advanced level writing requirements such as exam essays, by requiring timed writing activities on a bi-weekly basis to improve writing fluency. Finally, students will collaborate with classmates to complete a variety of assignment types.

Intermediate Reading and Vocabulary

ELI 032 Intermediate Reading and Vocabulary 7 cr.

This course will provide students with the necessary instruction to increase reading fluency and comprehension of intermediate level academic texts. Students in this course will engage with, understand and respond to authentic texts in a more thoughtful and critical way. Students will practice and engage in a variety of reading strategies to aid comprehension of a variety of authentic texts. By reading an independent novel, students will gain experience identifying a variety of literary features as well as be exposed to and gain appreciation for a diversity of experiences. Students will be expected to demonstrate an intermediate level understanding of vocabulary and meaning and will collaborate with classmates to complete a variety of assignment types.

Intermediate Speaking and Listening

ELI 031 Intermediate Speaking and Listening 7 cr.

In this course, students will improve their listening and speaking skills necessary for academic success and appropriate participation in social communication in an English-speaking community. In preparation for advanced study in English, this course will provide students with daily opportunities to engage in small group and class discussion on cultural and academic topics while developing the necessary skills and resources to ensure comprehension. Instruction will focus primarily on the development of fluency in the student’s spoken communication and will emphasize accuracy in production at an intermediate level. Students will develop their note-taking skills by learning and practicing new strategies for listening to and comprehending academic conversations and lectures on various topics. In addition, students will prepare and deliver formal academic speeches/presentations throughout the course. They will collaborate with classmates to complete a variety of assignment types.

Pre-Intermediate Integrated Skills

ELI 024 Pre-Intermediate Integrated Skills 4 cr.

This is a project-based course. Students will participate in a group project which utilizes all of the four language skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking). Projects could include writing and presenting short plays, case studies, etc. Students will demonstrate the ability to interact and work in a classroom setting on various themed projects while further developing their language skills in “real-life” situations. 

Pre-Intermediate Writing and Grammar

ELI 023 Pre-Intermediate Writing and Grammar 7 cr.

In this pre-intermediate writing course, students will develop basic skills for writing academic paragraphs and basic academic essays for different purposes. The course will help students increase their grammatical accuracy at a pre-intermediate level which they will be expected to demonstrate through meaning in their own writing. In addition, this course will help students refine their ability to use spelling, punctuation and formatting rules correctly. Students in this course will engage in the steps of the writing process, including drafting and revising. Finally, students will collaborate with classmates to complete a variety of assignment types.
