Testimonial by Bill Tatun, NMU Parent from Homosassa, Florida

How many students do you have attending Northern? What year are they/when did they graduate? What is/was their field of study?

I have one student attending NMU.
My daughter started in the Fall of 2022 and will graduate in May of 2025.
My daughter is majoring in Information Assurance and Cyber Defense - Military Track.

Describe your student's experience in finding, selecting, and attending Northern. What was your involvement in this process?

My daughter was attracted to NMU through the USA Weightlifting Program and was selected for the team. The very next year the program was eliminated. That being said, she fell in love with the school and community and wanted to complete her studies there despite the program cancellation. She has adopted the UP as her “hometown” and would love to find employment where should could stay in the area. She claims that Florida (she moved to Florida in 5th grade coming from NY) is too hot a climate for her and makes her face sweat too much. My daughter loves the UP, is doing well in finishing up her coursework, is active in her work with Common Grounds, is a hospice volunteer, on the NMU rowing team, and works part-time at the school’s golf course to fill the time. She loves the UP so much that she didn’t even come home this past summer.

Was it a difficult or easy decision for your student to attend NMU? What sealed the deal?

No, it was an EASY decision. Although she visited many other beautiful campuses, when we visited NMU, she applied immediately when we got back to the hotel. She also applied for the NMU Weightlifting Team in which she was accepted and was an active participant in until the program cancellation. She was happy to receive and offer to attend and she immediately accepted.

What were your main concerns about your student attending Northern? How were those concerns addressed?

Distance. But that worked itself out very quickly. Marquette is a great little city and my daughter loves being there. On that note, we love visiting as much as we can (usually to see a couple of hockey games).
