Testimonial by Hope Young, NMU Parent from Harrison, Michigan
How many students do you have attending Northern? What year are they/when did they graduate? What is/was their field of study?
I will have one student attending NMU in the fall of 2022, majoring in Art/Illustration. She graduates from high school in May 2022.
Describe your student's experience in finding, selecting, and attending Northern. What was your involvement in this process?
My husband and I were very involved in our daughter's college selection process. She had applied at 7 schools and was accepted at all of them, including early decision acceptance at the University of Michigan. She didn't want to tour any of them except NMU and U of M.
Was it a difficult or easy decision for your student to attend NMU? What sealed the deal?
My daughter fell in love with Northern on the very first visit. We were not even halfway through the thorough and amazing tour and she leaned over to me and whispered, "This is it, I don't need to see U of M, this is where I'm going". She loved the smaller campus and community feeling and my husband and I appreciated the safety features, the Freshman Fellows program, and that professors are so available (equal number of office hours as classroom hours).
What were your main concerns about your student attending Northern? How were those concerns addressed?
My main concern was financial. Our daughter had been awarded the Hail Scholarship from U of M, which covers all costs...room, board, tuition, fees, anything, and everything. When we received her financial aid award letter from Northern, however, I was pleasantly surprised to see that it was almost equal; she would need a very minimal amount out of pocket each year, and that was before any Foundation or local scholarships, and before the Freshman Fellows program.
