Jessica Kurtycz is an Outdoor Recreation Management major from Grand Rapids, Michigan. She anticipates graduating in May of 2023.
Why did you decide to come to NMU?
I transferred from GVSU in fall 2020. I came to NMU to find my home away from home. I came to find myself in the environment and indulge myself in the community.
How did you decide your major/minor?
I decided to major in Outdoor Recreation Management because there is nothing better than the outdoors. It truly is beautiful to soak in the sun and just take a deep breath. I wish to spend my professional career doing this every day.
What's an example of a cool, interesting or helpful thing that you have done as a part of your major?
As an assignment (RE155), we got to go camping! NMU had plenty of resources we can use, like sleeping bags, tents, etc. for the trip.
What are you involved in on- and off-campus and what has been the most rewarding experience?
Greek life (Alpha Gamma Delta) has been extremely rewarding. I met individuals that I know will walk in my wedding once I am older. It opened the door for unlimited possibilities after college.
What does “be Northern” mean to you?
"Be Northern" means to me "be you". I transferred from a bigger university where you were just another statistic. Here, I feel like I am someone who matters. I can be myself out in the wilderness with my major, and I can be myself with Alpha Gamma Delta. It truly is a great place to just be free.
Further comments about your NMU experience?
Nothing can beat the location of Marquette, MI. It is a great place to learn and have a college experience.
