Keshawn and his mom with his diploma

Keshawn Howard is a criminal justice/political science alumni from Rochester, New York. He graduated in May 2021.

Northern provided an opportunity for me through football that I could not turn down, as well as academics.

I have always had a passion for defending the wrongfully accused. Black men are underrepresented in the law enforcement sector but are overrepresented in incarceration rates.

Studying the police department.

As for on-campus activities, I am a student-athlete. Off-campus I am a part of a bible study group on the Northern Michigan football team.

To be northern means to be distinctly different. Different in the aspect that you are in a pretty remote location for a lot of students and you are presented with ample opportunities and experiences. Throughout these experiences, you are allowed to choose your “destiny” in a sense. It’s very beautiful.

Coming from New York and transferring in, I was concerned about the initial adjustment. But my concerns quickly turned it gratitude after meeting the amazing people in the town of Marquette!
