Dr. April Lindala is a professor at the Center for Native American Studies at Northern Michigan University. She received her Ph.D in Rhetoric, Theory, and Culture from the Humanities Department at Michigan Technological University in Houghton. 

This seminar will explore how nine Indigenous documentary and experimental films relate to climate narratives. Dr. Lindala uses a decolonizing cinematic engagement practice to reflect on these different films.

This year's Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition will be held on Thursday, February 20th, 2025. Forrest Roberts Theater. 1:00pm-3:00pm.  If you are unable to make it in person, please consider joining by Zoom! (Zoom Link will be shared when available.)

Each candidate is limited to three minutes and one static PowerPoint slide to aid in the presentation of their thesis research. Students must be actively enrolled in a graduate program and must present original research. Prizes are offered for winners!

All graduate students can sign up today on NMU's Three Minute Thesis webpage. An informational workshop will be held on February 12 to answer questions for participants at any stage of the thesis process.

The Celebration of Student Scholarship is an annual event at Northern Michigan University that showcases the scholarly work of undergraduate and graduate students across all disciplines. Students present their research, creative writing, artwork, and other projects through research posters and oral presentations, sharing their achievements with the NMU and Marquette communities. The event is free and open to the public.

Students interested in participating are encouraged to work with their faculty advisors to plan their submissions.

The Scholarly Buzz Sessions at NMU offer an engaging platform for faculty and students to showcase their research through short presentations—just three slides or five minutes each. This biannual event, held in the Fall and Winter semesters, also includes a brief overview of the Office of Sponsored Programs and the College of Graduate Studies and Research. Open to everyone, the sessions celebrate interdisciplinary research and are designed to accommodate busy schedules, allowing attendees and presenters to come and go as needed. The event typically lasts about two hours, with light refreshments provided.

Middle and high school Science Olympiad teams from throughout the Upper Peninsula will create designs, solve problems, and learn the importance of teamwork by competing in different STEM-related events at the annual regional tournament. The top-placed teams will advance to the State tournament hosted by Michigan State University in late spring.

The Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association will be conducting an in-person site visit on February 10, 2025. If you would like to meet with the CAA site visitors regarding Academic Accreditation of the Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology Program at Northern Michigan University, please come to the public meeting.

The Psychological Science Department is holding three, on-campus and virtual information sessions for NMU's Master of Science in Psychology program. Our two-year program involves coursework and research/clinical opportunities to prepare you for various careers in psychology or graduate school. Graduates of our program have gone on to be therapists, professors, and industry leaders! 

These sessions will provide an overview of the program curriculum, opportunities, the application process, funding, and much more! We will also hold a Q&A period with current faculty and graduate students. We invite prospective or future applicants (deadline Feb 1 each year) to attend and learn about the program and how to strengthen their applications.
