The Lower Kuskokwim School District (LKSD) is an exciting and rewarding place to learn and teach in "bush" Alaska. LKSD is the largest rural school district in Alaska with 27 schools, 350 teachers, about about 4,000 Yup'ik students. The landmass of the District is about the size of West Virginia spreading along the Kuskokwim River and Bering Coast of southwest Alaska. Travel is by jet from Anchorage, and then by small plane, snowmobile or boat from Bethel to the village sites.

LKSD supports instructional staff with a robust professional development program differentiated from whole group to individually selected courses. There is a teacher mentor program that includes orientation to the local culture and learning about our curriculum.

LKSD is looking to hire about 40 teachers in the following areas for the 2022-2023 year:

  • K-12 Principal

Northern Now: Rural Health Panel Discussion

Rural Health Panel on Feb. 9

Join us on Wednesday, February 9 at 7 p.m. Eastern as we partner with the NMU Center for Rural Health and welcome a panel of experts to discuss the social determinants of health, which are the conditions and environments that affect a wide range of health, functioning, and quality-of-life outcomes and risks. Elise Bur, the director of the NMU Center for Rural Health, will moderate the conversation, focusing on some of the social determinants of health we experience in the U.P. The panelists will discuss the Community Health Worker profession, what impact they have on the health and well-being of individuals, and particularly how Community Health Workers are addressing food insecurity in our area, one of the social determinants of health.

Panelists include:

  • Shannon Lijewski, NCHW, MBA, CHCEF, principal of Everyday Life Consulting, an agency that focuses on the development and training of Community Health Workers 
  • Alazar “Zar” Chroman, a local Community Health Worker with UPHS/AdvantagePoint Health Alliance
  • Sarah Monte ‘08, outreach director for Marquette Food Co-op and NMU alumna

Northern Now Callback Panel Discussion Featuring: Theatre and Dance Alumni

Join us on Wednesday, January 12 at 7 p.m. Eastern as we “callback” a panel of alumni from the Theatre and Dance Department! All working in various areas of the industry, these alumni will provide insight on how their education at NMU prepared them for their careers, reminisce about the exciting projects they worked on during their time as a student, and share their plans for the future.

Panelists include:

  • Michael Detroit ’85, executive producer of Playhouse on the Square, a 52-year-old non-profit professional resident theatre company located in Memphis, Tenn.
  • Janel Rayome ’04, administrative director of Ballet Tech, a school of intensive classical dance training in New York City
  • Kelly Moscinski ’07, ‘09 owner and head of casting at The Voicecaster, the first voiceover casting company in the country
  • Travis Moscinski ’09, professional actor/voice actor and co-owner of The Voicecaster, an LA-based casting and recording studio

Bill Digneit ‘08, department head and co-director of NMU Theatre and Dance, and Jill Grundstrom ’04, ’20, assistant professor and co-director of NMU Theatre and Dance, will moderate the event and share audience questions LIVE with the artists. The Career & Summer Employment Job Fair is the only in-person job fair this semester.  It is an opportunity for companies and organizations to discuss full-time jobs, summer jobs, internships and part-time jobs with students.  There is no cost for students and alumni to attend this event. 

Win a Prize!  Students/Alumni who register in Handshake and also check in at the job fair will be placed into a drawing.  Ten winners will be selected and notified the day after the fair.

NMU Wildpups - Animal Assisted Therapy

The Wildpups are a part of NMU’s new Animal Assisted Therapy program. If you miss your pup back at home or need a way to ease the anxieties that come with being a college student, the Wildpups are here to help. All are welcome to enjoy time with these licensed therapy dogs.

You will also have a volunteer opportunity to participate in research to help grow the field of Animal Assisted Therapy. Surveys will be available to fill out at the event, and those who participate are entered into a drawing to win an Amazon gift card! Registration is unlimited, and everyone is welcome to come.

Join us for the 17th Annual Construction Management and Technology Career Fair.  This concentrated recruiting event, geared specifically towards students choosing construction, electronics, and technology majors, will allow you to visit with students and alumni who are seriously considering the challenging careers related to these fields. 

This year, there will be two options for students, alumni and employers to connect.  The virtual portion of the fair will be held in the morning and our traditional in-person fair will be held in the afternoon.  All attendees will have the opportunity to attend either or both.

Join us on Wednesday, June 9 at 7 p.m. Eastern as we once again welcome Chef Alden Griffus CCC ’10, executive chef of Dining Services at Northern Michigan University, for a summer send-off cooking segment. For our last Northern Now of the semester, Chef Griffus will share her favorite summer recipes in time for the warm weather. Scott Bousson ’11, operations manager of Dining Services will also be joining Chef Griffus to share his take on the best recipes for the season.
