A Relational Approach to the Environmental Humanities

How can literature and other forms of culture impact ecological systems? This talk will present a relational approach to the environmental humanities that seeks to reshape our environmental relationships by tracing the wider systemic effects of various forms of cultural engagement. It will illustrate this approach by describing how nineteenth-century environmental authors like William Wordsworth, Henry David Thoreau, and John Muir became associated with specific landscapes in ways that shaped the modern significance of nature and the emergence and development of the environmental movement.

Scott Hess is Professor of English and Environmental Sustainability at Earlham College. He currently serves as Conference Chair on the Executive Council of the Association for the Study of Literature and Environment (ASLE).

Fortune Lake Lutheran Camp is located on a beautiful freshwater lake, surrounded by 140 acres of forest in Crystal Falls, Michigan— just 90 minutes from Marquette! Fortune Lake Lutheran Camp is an outdoor ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, providing youth summer camp, intergenerational camps, and camp for adults with developmental disabilities, as well as year-round events, rental groups, and retreats. Since its founding over 90 years ago, Fortune Lake Lutheran Camp has striven to be "a place of grace where all can grow in faith," welcoming all people, of all faiths, of all ages, in all seasons.

We hire about 30 enthusiastic summer staff each year, and are always looking for new additions to the team! The Huron Mountain Club is a private club on a contiguous tract of woodland located within the Huron Mountains region of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, 30 miles northwest of the city of Marquette. The Club lands include unpaved roads to access a network of interior lakes and streams as well as trails to other points of interest. The Club provides its members and its employees the opportunity for various forms of healthful recreation including hiking, fishing, and hunting. Partridge Creek Farm is a small non-profit educational farm located in Ishpeming that focuses on equitable communities through local food systems. Menards is hiring for their Manager Trainee position.  They will be holding open interviews (no need to schedule in advance) and will be answering any questions you may have about that position and careers with Menards. 

Our Manager Trainee position is a paid, full-time, hands-on training program designed to develop and prepare you for the world of Menards Management. As you progress through the Manager Trainee program, your General Management team, Department Managers, and Store Team Managers will work alongside you to develop your understanding of our business and help prepare you to take on a management role in the near future! Upon completion of the program, you will be eligible to promote to any of our 330+ store locations, corporate office, manufacturing facilities, and distribution centers.

The Marine Officer Program sends competitively selected college students to Marine Corps Leadership training over the summer in Quantico, Virginia.  The program is available every summer and open to ALL classes and majors (full-time student and GPA over 2.0 required). Upon completing the summer training and graduation from NMU, students earn a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps in Aviation, Logistics, Intelligence, Military Police, Engineering, Infantry, and 20+ more areas!

The Winter Semester Job Fair is an opportunity for companies and organizations to discuss full-time jobs and internships with students.  There is no cost for students and alumni to attend this event.

Win a Prize!  Students/Alumni who register in Handshake and also check in at the job fair will be placed into a drawing.  Ten winners will be selected and notified the day after the fair.   

There will be an opportunity to get a professional headshot taken at the fair!
