The Lydia M. Olson Library was selected as one of 50 U.S. libraries to present the touring version of the Americans and the Holocaust special exhibition, which opened in April 2018 at the Museum in Washington, D.C., during the Museum’s 25th anniversary.

As part of the exhibition, we will be hosting a discussion on Tuesday, October 13th of "Swastika Nation: Fritz Kuhn and the Rise and Fall of The German-American Bund" with writer, teacher and speaker, Arnie Bernstein.

The Wildpups are back! Come meet The NMU Wildpups that are part of NMU's Animal Assisted Therapy program. Students, faculty, and staff are welcome to enjoy time with therapy dogs. There will be an optional volunteer opportunity to participate in research to help grow the field of Animal Assisted Therapy. A before and after survey will be available at the event, along with an option to enter a drawing to win an Amazon gift card for those who participate in the survey. The Lydia M. Olson Library will host an opening reception for Americans and the Holocaust, a traveling exhibition from the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum that examines the motives, pressures and fears that shaped Americans’ responses to Nazism, war and genocide in Europe during the 1930s and 1940s.

The Lydia M. Olson Library was selected as one of 50 U.S. libraries to present the touring version of the Americans and the Holocaust special exhibition, which opened in April 2018 at the Museum in Washington, D.C., during the Museum’s 25th anniversary.

The library’s reception will feature remarks by Leslie Warren and Dr. Robbie Goodrich and a special opportunity to tour the exhibition. Light refreshments will be served, and all ages are welcome.

Dr. Robbie Goodrich will open up an attempt to develop a more complete understanding of how the term "genocide"—or comparisons to historical genocides—are (ab)used to promote specific political agendas in today's society.

Americans and the Holocaust will be on display at The Lydia M. Olson Library, along with a series of related special events, from September 15, 2022 to October 23, 2022. Admission is free.

This family-friendly Homecoming event will be held on the morning of Saturday, September 24th. Kick off the day with an early-morning story time led by the NMU Men and Women's Basketball teams, while enjoying delicious bagels. Later, join NMU alum Suzanna Schroeder and the Student Art Gallery for some fun crafting activities.

The Lydia M. Olson Library will also be hosting an Olson Open House, inviting past and present library workers and supervisors to reconnect and discuss upcoming library renovation plans with Kim Smalley and Leslie Warren.

The American Red Cross will be hosting a blood drive on the main floor of the Lydia M. Olson Library from 10:00 a.m. — 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 14th.

While there has been a significant and encouraging response to the dire need for blood across the nation, the American Red Cross needs more people to give in the weeks ahead to recover from its worst blood shortage in more than a decade.

Considering the COVID-19 pandemic, the Red Cross employees have implemented added precautions to ensure blood drives and donation centers are safe for donors and staff.

Stressed about exam week? Tired of staring at a screen? Relax through movement by joining a YOGALATES session at the Lydia M. Olson Library. 

On Monday, April 18th, PEIF Instructors, Charise and Lynne, will be hosting a relaxing YOGALATES session from 4:00-5:00 p.m. on the main floor of the library. 

It is a combination of yoga-flow and mat pilates set to great modern music. No matter your fitness level or exercise experience, this is a great course to practice stretches, balance, core work and intentional movement in all your muscles to gain strength and great posture. Yoga mats will be provided for the event.

Join Hannah and Faith on Wednesday, April 6th for a Blackout Poetry & Collage Workshop from 2-4pm! Will take place on the library main floor, in front of the SAG. Materials will be provided -- come black out and cut up some newspapers and old books with us!

Historian, educator, and former First Lady of Northern Michigan University (2004–12) and San Francisco State University (2012–19), Phyllis Michael Wong, will be hosted by the Lydia M. Olson Library in Room 224 at 2:00 p.m. on Apr. 14, 2022.

The Phyllis Michael Wong Event will highlight Wong’s research and writing process during the creation of her novel, We Kept Our Towns Going: The Gossard Girls of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Discussing the influence of the H.W. Gossard factory on female workers within the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Wong shares the stories of the Gossard Girls who fueled the local economy and challenged societal expectations throughout the 20th century.

This event will be preceded by a presentation at the Marquette Regional History Center on Apr. 13, where Wong will discuss her novel in further detail.

Copies of We Kept Our Towns Going: The Gossard Girls of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula will be available for purchase at both the Lydia M. Olson Library and Marquette Regional History Center events. Audience members will also have the opportunity to engage with Wong in live discussions.

While there has been a significant and encouraging response to the dire need for blood across the nation, the American Red Cross needs more people to give in the weeks ahead to recover from its worst blood shortage in more than a decade. 

As COVID is still highly present in our area, the Red Cross continues to engage safety precautions during our blood drives such as mandatory masks for all staff, donors and volunteers (regardless of vaccination status), disinfecting all surfaces, physical distancing and self-serve, pre-packaged snacks and drinks, still limiting service of any food or drink that is not individually packaged.
