  • To register, complete the Winter Research Day registration form.

Workshop:

  • Three Minute Presentation Workshop - January 29, 2026TSB 2810 Participation is not required to compete, but highly encouraged.

What are the Poster Presentations?
Poster presentations are a way for graduate and undergraduate students in all areas to discuss their research, creative, and/or scholarly activity in a visual format that is more in-depth than what you will see at 3MP and allows for more casual discussion than an oral presentation (and less pressure for new researchers). For Winter Research Day, our poster session will be limited to 50 posters.

What is 3MP?
Modeled after 3MT, this new undergraduate competition is open to all majors and disciplines. Students present their research, creative, or scholarly work in three minutes using one static slide, emphasizing clarity, creativity, and audience engagement. Winners receive cash prizes and campus recognition.

What is the Fellowship and Scholarship Workshop?
This workshop will provide an orientation to students interested in national fellowships or scholarships that support students studying, researching, or teaching English abroad. In this workshop, participants will examine several overseas programs; they will also participate in a short mock review of application essays. Lunch will be provided; register here

What is 3MT®?
Part of an international competition developed by the University of Queensland (UQ) in 2008.  3MT challenges graduate students to clearly explain their research in just three minutes using one static PowerPoint slide. The goal is to communicate complex ideas in an engaging way that is accessible to a non-specialist audience. Winners receive prizes, campus recognition, and the opportunity to advance to the regional competition.

What is the Scholarly Buzz Session?
The Scholarly Buzz Sessions at NMU are a platform for faculty and staff to quickly present their research in three slides and five minutes. The event also provides a brief overview of the Office of Sponsored Programs and the College of Graduate Studies and Research. Everyone is welcome to attend this interdisciplinary research event held at least biannually in the Fall semester and again in the Winter semester. The event is designed to allow attendees, including the presenters, to come and go as teaching and class schedules allow.

Storm - Tale of the Edmund Fitzgerald and Other Shipwrecks

NMU Logo on bricks

Jamrich 1100

The Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center is proud to announce a special historical performance, Storm, featuring maritime historian Ric Mixter and musician Dan Hall. The concert will take place on Friday, October 24 at 7:30 p.m. in Jamrich Hall 1100 on the campus of Northern Michigan University. The event is free and open to the public. Donations will be encouraged and greatly appreciated.

Gordon Lightfoot turned the Great Lakes’ largest shipwreck into a legend, but his version of the story is more fiction than fact. Historian Ric Mixter has spent thirty years interviewing people who built, sailed, and searched for the “Mighty Fitz” when it vanished 100 miles from Marquette on November 10th, 1975, and his findings have led him to become the most viewed expert on the disaster.

Mixter returns to his hometown of Marquette on October 24th with musician Dan Hall to tell the Fitzgerald story in a most unique way- with Dan’s custom music on key characters in the storm and with Ric’s exclusive interviews from those who were eyewitnesses to the search and discoveries made 550 feet below Lake Superior.  Why didn’t the Fitz make it to Whitefish Point? Ric separates the myths of the loss with data and interviews while narrating incredible new songs about the most famous ship to sail the lakes.

Mixter was the media coordinator for the controversial Delta dive to the shipwreck in July of 1994, and he will share behind the scenes information on the discovery of a lost sailor who was wearing a lifejacket when lost. His frank discussion is done tastefully and the entire event is suitable for the entire family.

Ric and Dan have toured extensively with their concert series STORM, being featured on Mackinac Island, Cheboygan, Traverse City and a half dozen other concert venues. Ric has toured two countries and even NASA telling stories of the Great Lakes, after a 30-year broadcast career that began at WMQT Q-107 and WLUC TV6 back in the early 1980s. He was born at KI Sawyer and even flew the last B-52 from that base when it closed Air Force operations in 1995.

30 Years Later: Remembering Haywire

Part of NMU's 125th Anniversary Celebration

Friday, April 4 at 7:30PM
1100 Jamrich Hall

In the spring of 1995, the Forest Roberts Theatre’s production of Haywire achieved national acclaim, being selected as one of only five productions—out of more than 900 submissions—to perform at the Kennedy Center’s American College Theatre Festival. This original musical, depicting life in an 1880s logging camp, was penned by NMU theatre professor Dr. Shelley Russell, with an original score composed by NMU music professor Dr. Rob Engelhart.

As part of NMU’s 125th Anniversary Celebration, the NMU Department of Theatre and Dance, in collaboration with the Department of Communication and Media Studies, will commemorate the 30th anniversary of this distinguished production. Join us on Friday, April 4, at 7:30 PM in 1100 Jamrich Hall for a special program that will honor the creators and feature selected scenes and musical numbers from the production by alumni and current students. We welcome the NMU and Upper Peninsula community to share in this evening of storytelling, music, and celebration.

The event is a fundraiser for the NMU students selected to compete in this year’s American College Theatre’s regional showcases. Tickets are Pay as you May and are available now at tickets.nmu.edu
